What would dizziness upon standing be a symptom of?

Asked by sarah826 (449points) October 27th, 2009

I’m the 13 yo girl with parents that have some weird ideas about healthcare (we go to a chiropractor instead of an MD). I’ve been diagnosed with asthma, but would dizziness upon standing be linked to that? Thanks all.

This happens to most people if they stand or even sit up too quickly. It’s normal and probably not linked to asthma. Unless you’re talking about something that happens all the time, even if you stand up slowly….

low blood preasure maybe?

dpworkin's avatar

Orthostatic hypotension?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Judi has it… I have low blood pressure. I could fall over from being dizzy at times. It could also be anemia. AND, yes Sarah, dizziness is a symptom of Asthma

SpatzieLover's avatar

Sarah, how are you feeling today? Tightness in your chest yet?

sarah826's avatar

oh ya. I’ve gotten used to tightness in my chest being my normal.

I am anemic, and it makes me veryy dizzy sometimes, especially when i get up quickly in the mornings i almost fall over on the way to the shower.

I get that dizziness in the evenings just before dinner. It disappears after I eat.

My brother had this when he was my age (it’s better now for him). He got tons of dizziness and would fall in a heap. He got all the tests under the sun done because they couldn’t figure out what it was. At the end the doc guessed orthostatic hypotension. So I guess it could be that. I just thought of this – he lived in my current bedroom from about 12 to 18 and this summer we did a radon test. It tested 4.0 and that’s the line between fine and bad, so could this be radon poisoning (or whatever you call that)?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@sarah826 Radon causes cancer. Your parents should repair the leak.

sarah826's avatar

We’ve thought about it but apparently it’s not that bad.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@sarah826 At level 4 it is deemed by the EPA to be in need of corrective measures. There is more about the health precautions regarding radon at ACS

If you have asthma, you should not be sleeping in that room.

Startling statistics put radon’s ill effects into perspective at the EPA site

Not enough oxygen could cause dizziness especially upon having quick movements. This would make you at risk for fainting. Can you tell your chiropractor about your breathing problems? Maybe he can help you get an inhaler somehow.

I was going to say low iron?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@jmah Yes, anemia will cause dizziness/weakness.

I had this problem for years. From the time I was 13 and sometimes still have it. Mine was caused by stress. I got away from all the stress and the dizziness and blacking out went away. Along with the black feet (literally, my feet turned the darkest shade of purple just from stress) and panic attacks.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@jmah Yes that could certainly do it as well.

There are many different things that can cause dizziness upon standing. Very often it is simply low blood pressure, or as others have described, temporary low blood pressure due to a sudden change from sitting to standing. I had this for many years until, over time, my blood pressure gradually inched up to “normal” levels.

Anemia is also a possibility as well as low blood sugar and anything that causes you not to get enough oxygen into your blood stream and carried to your head, such as chronic asthma.

Many more causes are listed here and here, but be aware that many of these causes are quite rare.

You really only need to worry if any of the following occur:

* Any severe first time or new instances of dizziness

* Dizziness without a clear or certain cause

* Any change in an established pattern of dizziness

* Worsening or new symptoms

* Dizziness after taking newly prescribed medications, or recent changes in previous prescriptions (since you don’t see a doctor this would be unlikely).

All dizziness with loss of consciousness needs emergency evaluation.”

However, if this is something that has been going on for a long time and has never gotten worse, then you should get plenty to drink, have regular meals, and get plenty of rest, and work on standing up more slowly. This may help dizziness associated with position changes.

Sounds like a serious case of standinguptooquicklyitis! But I could be wrong considering my main study in med school was gynocology.

sarah826's avatar

I have noticed that if I don’t eat enough, it gets REALLY bad.

Darwin's avatar

Then low blood sugar could be a cause. Make sure to eat enough, or better yet, eat multiple small meals throughout the day. Five such meals should do the trick if it is low blood sugar.

gailcalled's avatar

@addicted2porn: Some med school! Remind me never to use you for gyn/e/cological issues. (If you’re making bad jokes, try to spell correctly.)

mclaugh's avatar

coulod be low blood pressure.

gailcalled's avatar

@mclaugh : Welcome to fluther. If you read the answers above yours, you will see that low blood pressure has been mentioned six times.

mclaugh's avatar

geeze, sorry, i dont always have time to check every answer.

mclaugh's avatar

and if it was mentionned before, then my reitterating it just makes it that much more of a valid answer, no?

mclaugh's avatar

well, thats your opinion.

gailcalled's avatar

@mclaugh: Get to know the ethos of this place (and do check your spelling; or are you against that as well as reading?).

(mentioned, re-iterating).
