What is your favorite activity for a snow day?

Asked by jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities (20019points) October 28th, 2009

It’s a cold and snowy day in CO, and school and work is canceled. We finally got a snow day! I’m enjoying some irish coffee in my pajamas, and watching some Animal Planet. What do you do on snow days?

I enjoy sleeping late and then doing some heavy duty shoveling. Don’t give me a namby-pamby snowblower, I’M A MAN!

When I used to live where we had those, I really enjoyed sleeping in. Then, we would all go out and sled or build snowmen or whatever until we got too cold. After that, it would be cocoa with plenty of marshmallows, a fire, and a good book.

A puzzle if I’m snowed in, after I go frolic of course.

Today I went sledding, sipped some hot chocolate, had a snowball fight, and snuggled with my favorite kids. It was kind of the best thing ever.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities Didn’t they say yesterday we’d get like 4 inches? I wasn’t expecting this!

Sometimes I play outside, sometimes I stay in and watch DVDs or read, sometimes I go down to Almondine and get a cocoa because they make excellent ones.

@forestGeek Oh, there was much frolicing to be had. So many snow angels!

@Likeradar That’s what they said, but I wouldn’t mind a few more feet of snow if it shuts everything down for the rest of the week.

Start a fire in the woodburner and cozy up in the living room with my s/o and my dogs. Later I would of course go outside and enjoy the wonderful thing that got work cancelled…the snow!

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities – Doesn’t snow too heavily here is Seattle, but last year was definitely an exception. So yeah, the frolicking can last hours when it does happen like that. There was enough snow last winter to take the snowboard out to the park near my house and ride the hills.

*Shoveling (yes, I like it..it’s a super workout since I have a large driveway)
*Snow Angels
*Snowmen
*Watching my dogs go crazy in the snow
*Watching my son catch snowflakes on his tongue
*Getting warmed up from being out in the cold with warm, fuzzy clothes
*Hot cider/chai or cocoa
*Fireplace & candles glowing
*Watching a great movie whilst curled up under a warm blankie

If there were actually snow days in Bakersfield more than every 100 years I’d break out my snowmobile.

@justn – Good to have it on hand just in case! :)

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities: I miss the Colorado snow! When we lived there, I would make giant snowballs on the ground. I also used to go into my backyard and make Mount Kilimanjaro. I don’t know why, but I used to make mini snow mountains and pretend I was climbing them.

When I was a freshman in college, we had a snow day and one of my roommates, being from South Africa, had never had a snow day. When we woke up and told her she didn’t have to go to class, she got a little panicky and started worrying about a meeting she had. We told her that the meeting was canceled because the university was closed. She got real quiet and asked what we would do on a snow day. My other roommate and I got big smiles on our faces and said that she could go back to sleep if she wanted to. She started cheering and jumping up and down.

Hang around in my PJs with coffee for a while, then go out and do stuff in the snow! Walk or hike, most likely, unless I can rope a friend or two into sledding or playing in the snow. Then, when we’re cold, come inside and have hot cocoa! I recommend hot cocoa with butterscotch schnapps for the all-around tasty warmth.

As a 3rd/4th grader, when there was a big snow, the plows would come onto our school’s playground at night and push the mounds of snow to the fences. By lunchtime recess the following day (snow days are rare in Milwaukee), these mounds were at least 10 ft. high, and we’d made caves, slides (iced down with water poured from our milk containers and thermoses), paths, forts, all sorts of fun stuff.

Then as the weather grew warmer at the end of March, we’d watch the piles melt down and follow the inexorable path to the drain in the middle of the yard.

Extremely tactical snowball fights. Everyone wears snow camouflage and sneaks around and does CQB in over sized snow forts.

@aprilsimnel In my family we always joke that those mounds (especially the ones at the malls) will last until may or June. There was one at Chilren’s Hospital that did last until May this year ;D

@forestGeek For sure. I actually go pretty much every weekend when there’s snow in the mountains around Bakersfield. Some killer riding is only a 2 hour drive away.
