What should I do about my messy neighbor?

Asked by grntwlkr (179points) October 29th, 2009

We have a community mailbox, and they always throw their junk mail in the street. I have returned it to them several times, first politely, then aggressively. Neither works. At this point I am more interested in publicly embarrassing them, or doing something mean.

Is there a place to put a small trash can (or paper recycling container) near the mailbox?

Put some super glue in their mail box and then return the junk mail to them. Permanently.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities now thats the type of answer I’m looking for!

that’s such trash. I would shred the mail, and bake brownies using the shreds. Give back to them as a gift and don’t tell them. They’ll figure it out in the first bite.

Take their real mail out and throw it in the street.

@patg7590 LOL! Nice! With ladybugs in them!
Well, littering IS a crime! Maybe…you could get the cops in on it?

Take their real mail out and throw it in the street.

Actually, that would be tampering with the mail and is illegal.

You could bundle it all up and give it to the mail carrier, saying that there must be something wrong since their mail keeps ending up on the street. Or you could write “Deceased – Return to Sender” across each piece of mail you get your hands on because it is in the street and drop it back in the mail. That could reduce the amount of junk mail they get and so would reduce the littering. And, maybe, it would interfere with something, such as Social Security My mom was declared dead by Social Security once while she was very much among the living and it took months to straighten everything out.

Placing a trash bin near the mailbox fixes this.

Val123's avatar

@The_Compassionate_Heretic That would be the first line of defense, I agree. But these folks sound like the type who’d just drop whatever where they stood, or toss it over their shoulder. I mean, would they actually go a teensy bit out of their way to hit the trash can? But yes, it’s the first thing I’d try.

I just leave my junk mail in the mailbox until the end of the week when I finally relent and bring it inside

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

@Val123 If there was a bin and it still happened, then they’re just being spiteful. We can’t fix that in others.

Is there a littering law in your township? Then video them littering and file a complaint. Better to let people who get paid to deal with such numbnuts, deal with it.

You can’t control their behavior and to try will lead to nothing but frustration and madness.

And who is going to empty said trash can? Certainly the ones who throw the junk mail in the street won’t.

Personally, I get my mail in a communal box also, and deliberately walk past my garbage can on the way back to the house. I file all the junk mail in said can so it doesn’t ever even enter my living space.

@Darwin Didn’t even think of that… :/
Is this a building with a landlord or manager?

I like the answer from @gemiwing Let the proper authorities take care of it, that’s what your taxes pay for.
