Absinthe... what are good brands from reliable companies?

Asked by wasabi_rave (138points) October 30th, 2009

I’m going to be buying a bottle as a Christmas present and have done quite a bit or research, but want to know your opinions. Have you tried it? Whats a good brand? Money isn’t the main concern, i’m probably going to spend around $100 on it anyway, I just obviously want whats worth my money.

I’ve been looking for it too and from what I can find out you have to order it from Finland. Supposedly a company is making it in Oregon, I think it’s called “wormwood” , which sounds good, but I don’t know much about it. I think you can get the real stuff from Finland. And the stuff I’ve tried was at burning man and it wasn’t real.

I don’t know brands, but have you ever tried Absinthe? I did a small flight of different ones last summer… it was the funnest buzz ever, but man, that shit is disgusting and really difficult to get down.

If it doesn’t have wormwood, it’s no good. It’s called thujone in Czech. Honestly, if you’re buying online, there is a high chance you will get crap. I would say go for whatever claims the highest amount of wormwood. If you can get it from Oregon, do it.
The safest, or most-assuring method is to import it yourself.

Oh yeah, it’s fucking disgusting fire water, but I definitely appreciate the appeal.

Absinthe – it’s what’s for dinner.

its called trillium absinthe it’s made in Oregon and it has wormwood in it – $60.00 a bottle

Yeah, but it all has to do with the actual thujone content. I read that even if it says it has wormwood in it, its been processed to the point where its thujone levels are extremely low. I’m not too keen on buying any that were made in the USA due to it not being authentic.
I did however find one site drinkupny.com that imports rare alcohol, and absinthe from France… one brand (Jade “Nouvelle-D’Orleans” Absinthe) in particular that got really high ratings with the absinthe connesuirs over at the Wormwood Society Forums, although it is $100–130/bottle.

And no, i have not tried it, thats why I want to get the best of the best cause they suposedly go down easier. Getting it authentic, at least I can say I’ve tried it, right?

I’d order the one from france.

Okay, I can’t tell you where to get authentic absinthe in the US, and the only place I’ve had the real-deal is in the Czech Republic, but wow! It was great.

They made it up sortof like a white Russian – using absinthe, KahlĂșa and cream. It is intensely strong but also remarkably good.

@LC_Beta good to know. So if my husband gags and says “Why the hell did you buy this?!” I can at least make a mixed drink out of it. lol

This painting (“A Glass of Absinthe”) by Edgar Degas has always struck me as a powerful deterrent.

@Jeruba wow, she looks so depressed. lol
I still with media involving absinthe such as the music video for “Perfect Drug” by Nine Inch Nails. Talk about a head trip.
