What was the first record/LP/single/cassette/CD you ever bought?

Asked by Mat74UK (4662points) October 31st, 2009

Did you think it was cool at the time and are now embarrassed by it?
What format was it?
Did you wear it out?
Do you still have it?
Are you that young that it was actually a download?
Are you going to be honest?
Mmmmmmmm

Billy Idol: Whiplash Smile. Vinyl LP. It’s somewhere.

He is still cool.

I don’t use anything else than digital media anymore.

The Unforgettable Fire by U2

- It was outstanding at the time and it still is. It is one of the best U2 albums ever, in my humble opinion.
– It was a cassette first and then I bought the CD as soon as I could get it.
– I wore out the cassette, yes.
– I still have the CD but now I have the all the songs on my iPod and that is where is I listen to them exclusively and I still listen to those songs several times a month.
– I was completely honest in my answers here.

Steely Dan – Aja
Long Play Vinyl

Got it for my Sister as a birthday present.
She still has it.

First single “Iwill Follow HIm” by Mary Wells
First LP, probably “Meet the Beatles”

Ame_Evil's avatar

Well the first album I bought which had spiralled me into my current taste of music was Once by Nightwish which I bought on a holiday. I still have it, despite the cardboard box (it was in a box with a 2nd bonus CD) falling apart.

As for my actual first casette/cd/lp or whatever I do not remember as it wasn’t significant.

First album- Tootsie soundtrack. Yes, I was a child.
First cassette- The Jets, Janet Jackson Control.
First CD- Little Earthquakes by Tori
First MP3— Hooverphonic.

I’m not ashamed of them. Even the Tootsie soundtrack.

Eurythmics: Touch on cassette (though come to think of it, I didn’t really buy it). I think the first one I actually bought was Mike Oldfield’s soundtrack of “The Killing Fields”.

First vinyl single: The Beatles, probably And I Love Her or Love Me Do 1964

First vinyl LP: Also The Beatles, I believe it was called Meet The Beatles 1964

First 8 track (I skipped 4 tracks): probably Rolling Stones , don’t recall which album

First cassette: I believe it was Traffic , either Shootout at The Fantasy Factory, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys or John Barleycorn or Welcome To The Canteen (I had them all when cassettes first appeared….I dont know which one I bought first

First CD: REM or Depeche Mode almost certainly

First Download: Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s The Dust of Retreat (following an @lefteh recommendation)

I probably still have all except the 8 track and it’s possible I don’t have the original cassette (they often broke). I haven’t looked at thew old vinyl in a long time. I didn’t date myself here, did I?

Only stuff active now are CDs (over 600, maybe 700), downloads, iTunes and a filled iPod. I do like music. See ya….Gary/wtf

First album I bought was Michael Jackson-Thriller. I was 7. I listened to it all the time on my little portable record player in my bedroom. I loved it and I’m not ashamed to admit that I still do. I now have Thriller and most other MJ music on my MP3 player. I don’t have the album anymore, but I wish I did. It was in with my moms vinyl collection and accidentally got sold at a garage sale.

First cassette was the B52s-Cosmic Thing.

First CD was R.E.M-Out of Time

First Single: Laban – Hvor skal vi sove i nat

First LP: Herrey’s – what can I say, I was raised by Eurovision!

First CD: Jason Donovan – Ten Good Reasons (please don’t tell anyone!)

mrentropy's avatar

I think it was Electric Light Orchestra’s Discovery. On 8-track.
If not that, then it was Night Ranger’s Midnight Madness on vinyl.

Capt_Bloth's avatar

The first I ever bought was a cd, it was Meddle by Pink Floyd.
But the first I owned was a tape, Master of Puppets by Metallica.

sarahny's avatar

I can’t tell….it’s too embarrassing.

laureth's avatar

The first one I bought with my own money was the Back to the Future sound track on cassette. I probably still have it somewhere because I don’t throw things out, heh. I don’t listen to it, though – moved on in taste. Plus, I no longer have it bad for Michael J. Fox.

Rubberband Man on 45. I think I was 10.

ccrow's avatar

Ohmigosh…I’m way to old to remember that for sure!!! It was definitely vinyl, anyway, & a single as I didn’t have much cashflow in those days! I’m thinking maybe ‘Montego Bay’... I don’t have to count ‘Alvin & the Chipmunks’ LPs since I didn’t buy those with my own money!! ;-P

ccrow's avatar

@RareDenver , I thought that version was far superior to the original; loved the video!

A 45 of Sugar, Sugar by the Archies.

I already had some other 45’s that had been given to me. My first album was a Beatles, but can’t remember which.

virtualist's avatar

Ray Charles, 33rpm,played on an old record player bought at a pawn shop, a truly religious experience @ 13yo.

SuperMouse's avatar

The first record I ever bought was probably El Loco by ZZTop. I spent a lot of time dancing to those songs. I do not have it anymore, as a matter of fact the only ZZTop even on my ipod is Cheap Sunglasses for old time sake. The first cassette I bought was Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen. I heard the song Jungleland on Mike Harrison’s Public Access radio show on KMET one Saturday morning. I still own Born to Run and still love just about every song on there. I have always hated the song Night, always skipped over that one. I also skip Meeting Across the River unless I want to be depressed. I thought they were both pretty cool at the time, and I think their coolness stands the test of time.

filmfann's avatar

Of course this was asked before , but since I didn’t answer it then, I bought Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles and a collection of James Bond movie music.

ubersiren's avatar

First cassette was MC Hammer, Too Legit to Quit

First CD was The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band

I still have Sgt. Pepper.

Lots of lurve for everyone’s good taste! I’m so ashamed…

Bluefreedom's avatar

@ubersiren. Never be ashamed of anything relating to the Beatles. They were epic in their time. =)

SuperMouse's avatar

@Bluefreedom I can’t help but wonder if @ubersiren is referring to this version of the album.

Bluefreedom's avatar

@SuperMouse. If it was that version, I’d be ashamed too. I didn’t even know that existed. Yikes.

ubersiren's avatar

Hahaha… oh no, it was the original. I’m not really ashamed of that, but more the cassette purchase.

gailcalled's avatar

Original score of Oklahoma (on vinyl).

tinyfaery's avatar

Album: Either Chipmunk’s Christmas Album or Michael Jackson Thriller. I no longer have these.

Cassette: I remember having the Joshua Tree on tape and a The Smith’s The Queen is Dead tape. But I cannot say what I bought first. I still have The Queen is Dead.

CD: Hmm…I think it was the debut of the Stone Roses, but I cannot be sure. I still have it.

YARNLADY's avatar

The first allbum I ever bought was by the Kingston Trio, from a vendor at their concert. I have all of the original Kingston Trio albums.

johanna's avatar

Boy George Charmakameleon (spelling) and Cyndi Lauper – True Colors.
I still love both, especially cyndi Lauper. Both were tapes.

This question really reveals our ages…..

I think it was something called “The ABC Song” by someone who called himself “Uncle Harry. I think I was 5 at the time, and my dad took me into my uncle’s music store to spend some birthday money. I remember listening to it, and then my dad asked me if I liked it, and if I wanted to buy it.

Edit Format? I think it was a 78 RPM record on red vinyl.

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

My first CD was some boy band from the late nineties. I can’t remember who it was and I would be greatly embarrassed by it now. My music style has changed for the better since then. The first Vinyl I bought was Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I have since bought many Vinyls. I like the sound of them better than CDs.

Dr_C's avatar

My first CD was Blind Melon´s self titled debut album, as well as Soul Asylum´s Runaway train single.

RareDenver's avatar

@Dr_C I bought the album that Runaway Train was on based on hearing Runaway Train and was most disappointed by the rest of it, that was a damn good song though

AmbeJL's avatar

1st tape: Spice Girls
1st CD: Titanic Soundtrack..hahaha

Dr_C's avatar

@AmbeJL your answer made me sad.

AmbeJL's avatar

@Dr_C Why my friend? It’s such silly music. I also remember the first cd purchased for me was a pre-kidz bop party cd. It had classics such as, “Don’t Break My Heart” and the “Macarena.” But, all sung by kids. Good dances were choreographed to that cd. lol

aprilsimnel's avatar

Chronic Town by R.E.M. on cassette. I was 12. I no longer have it; it was replaced long ago after I bought the Dead Letter Office/Chronic Town CD at uni my freshman year.

oratio's avatar

@AmbeJL What is pre-kidz? Music lessons?

OreetCocker's avatar

@sarahny go on, you tell yours and I’ll tell mine :-)

Jack_Haas's avatar

Beverly Hills Cop OST. Only good stuff from Patti LaBelle, Midnight Star, Junior, Shalamar etc… I wasn’t really into any kind of music until I bought this compilation.

limeaide's avatar

Pacman Fever on a 45, I was 4 years old. I just listened to it. I don’t hardly remember listening to it. I don’t think I’ll go out of my way to listen to it again. Here’s the link if you’d like a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-MONIvP6kI

AmbeJL's avatar

@limeaide hahhahahah that pacman fever is making me go out of my mind! lol!

Aster's avatar

boy that was a long time ago. I still have many of my 45’s. I’ll guess my first record was Hound Dog by Elvis.
