What if your body couldn't heal from anything, how would your world be different?

Asked by erichw1504 (26448points) November 5th, 2009

Think of all the cuts, bruises, and broken bones you’ve had. Imagine you could never recover from them. How different would you look? How would it have affected yours and others lives? How many broken bones and cuts and bruises would you have?

I would be dead.

Likeradar's avatar

I’d be dead. So it would be very different.

virtualist's avatar

If I could not heal from anything, then I agree with @J0E and @Likeradar… I would be ‘toast’.

But, if one assumes one cannot die but just accumulates non-healed problems with the body one would become a human sort of serpent wriggling along on the ground and one would look like the worst kind of monster ever portrayed in a movie. Poe or King should have written about this!

Jude's avatar

I’d be dead as a doornail.

erichw1504's avatar

@Everyone OK, I took out diseases, just everything else.

Ame_Evil's avatar

I would probably be alive, but covered in cuts and stuff – especially on my legs.

I do assume you are assuming your body stops the bleeding and stuff, else of course everyone would be dead.

J0E's avatar

@erichw1504 I think most of us would still be dead from bleeding to death or infection.

Likeradar's avatar

Is there pain relief in this alternate universe?
(I’m trying to imagine a life of having a broken tailbone and the pain and debilitation involved in that’0

Jude's avatar

If there was no pain relief, well, we’d be in agony, and like @J0E said, there’s infection, as well. If we couldn’t treat the infection, we’d be in trouble. If there was pain relief, we’d be hopped up on meds.

I wouldnt have hands….
I would have all but 2 of my ribs broken
be littered with cuts…

markyy's avatar

I would have:
> a bump the size of a baseball on my left hand/wrist.
> a gaping hole on my right knee.
> a gaping hole on the back of my head (right where evelyn’s third eye is).
> a couple pieces of rock under my skin right above my right ankle.
> a trident stuck under my left foot (which would probably make shopping for shoes a nightmare).
> a couple dozen first degree burn marks.
> a front tooth missing (does this count? It didn’t grow back naturally).

And no, I know what you are thinking, I’m not mentally disabled nor do I have a dead wish, I was just a regular (and maybe a bit stupid) daredevil as a kid.

@kibaxcheza Your hands got cut of? did you steal a loaf of bread?

SheWasAll_'s avatar

I would probably wouldn’t be able to walk because of broken toes, twisted ankles, pinched nerves in my feet and other such injuries. But other than the risk of infection or bleeding out, I probably wouldn’t have any life threatening injuries, just lots of cuts and bruises. come to think of it, a perma-black eye would be pretty badass

erichw1504's avatar

@Everyone, I understand you’d be dead from infection or blood loss or whatever, it’s just a hypothetical question about how different you would look and what not, taking out the dead part…

probably should have worded the question differently

J0E's avatar

Putting all the “lethality issues” aside, I’d probably be cut up pretty good, sprained muscles in several areas.

We’d all look like zombies wouldn’t we?

aprilsimnel's avatar

My lower half would be a mess of bruises and pain, especially my thighs. I dash around a lot and have had a tendency to bump into things, though with all the karate I’m doing this year, I’m more present in my body than I used to be.

shadling21's avatar

I’d be dead.
Also, untattooed and unpierced.
And pretty unattractive.

faye's avatar

i’d be bruised up and cut all over with a mouth full of rotting gums – yaaahhh!

MissAnthrope's avatar

I’m rather awkward and graceless, so I’d be a battered mess or dead by now.

pinkparaluies's avatar

I’d probably be dead.

drClaw's avatar

No question I would be dead. I’ve been less than lucky in my life when it comes to injury, but extremely lucky when it comes to my ability to heal, without that I would certainly be dead.

ccrow's avatar

Hmmm… I’d have a few broken toes; I would have many scrapes, mostly on my knees but elsewhere as well; I’d have gashes in the bottoms of my feet; my tailbone would be broken; I would have a huge lump underneath one knee from falling upstairs; I would have a split lip, screwed up nose & concussion from a bad fall on an icy road (@erichw1504- would I still be unconscious??)... oh, & a screwed-up thumbnail from shutting my thumb in the car door… probably more that I don’t remember. How would it change things- well, I certainly would look pretty unattractive for a start.

LKidKyle1985's avatar

I think I would live in a bubble, and be very bitter. Until one day I cut myself shaving and died a terrible, and slow death.

zephyr826's avatar

My legs would be bloody messes below the knees, my left foot would constantly be dragging, both of my shoulders would be dislocated, my lip and nose would constantly be split . I’d have cleat-shaped bruises across my ribs, and two tears at the back of my ears . Most of the injuries are from rugby.

Darwin's avatar

Much of my skin would be purple from bruises, if I weren’t dead already, and I would certainly be a whole bunch more cautious and would never have learned to ride a bicycle.

Grisaille's avatar

Dead from blood loss.

erichw1504's avatar

OK, this was the worst question I’ve ever done. You don’t have to post anymore answers. I’m not even going to follow it myself anymore. Bye bye!

markyy's avatar

@erichw1504 Instead of this dramatic stage exit, couldn’t you just simply give an example of what you wanted us to answer? Don’t get mad at us for formulating the question too open (and apparently confusing).

Please wait with answering until I get keyboard cat behind his keyboard!

erichw1504's avatar

@markyy I wasn’t getting mad, I am more mad at myself for not asking the question right. And I’ve already explained a couple times in more detail of what I was looking for.

Dun, dun, dun, dun, doo, doo, da, doo!

markyy's avatar

@erichw1504 I understand that can be quite frustrating, so what would you answer if I asked you right now: How different would you look? How would it have affected yours and others lives? How many broken bones and cuts and bruises would you have?

JLeslie's avatar

When I first read this I thought it would be about emotional healing. So much for assumptions.

I might have broken my toe (not sure I never had an xray for it).

I have had some serious low grade infections that caused me significant pain for years. I sometimes still take high doses of antibiotics at times—they are like magic, I wish I could just get well and stay well.

I had stitches above my eye in my right eybrow.

A few scraped knees.

Some bruises from bumps, not from being hit.

Many cuts on my hands, some little and few larger ones that took a while to stop bleeding.

Bluefreedom's avatar

If you didn’t die, you’d probably be living an existence of constant pain and suffering and that’s something I wouldn’t wish on even my worst enemy or anyone else for that matter.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

Then I’d still be pretty sore and bruised still from my car accident.

Samurai's avatar

Wouldn’t you body decay rapidly from not being able to reproduce skin cells and such?

I’d probably be still alive if only injuries didn’t heal.

wundayatta's avatar

First cut I had, I’d be dead due to bleeding out.

Samurai's avatar

@daloon I’m sure they would find a way to plug it up.

erichw1504's avatar

@Samurai @daloon Yea, a cork… or duct tape.

First of all my leg would have probably gone gangrenous and fallen off from a dog attack when I was 5 years old, my jaw would forever be on show from a large gash on my chin that needed stitches when I fell of my bike aged 11, my right hand would be useless from several broken bones sustained in a fight in my teens, my right foot would forever be pointing backwards and popped up behind my leg from a random street attack I was subjected to in my mid 20’s (putting me in a wheelchair as I already lost my other leg remember) somehow in this wheel chair I drunkenly rode a mountain bike down the stairs in my house and broke my collar bone on the radiator, making my left arm useless, I then go on to break it 2 more times, once falling over in the woods at an illegal rave (saving my can of beer in my useless right hand) and once falling down some stairs in a nightclub. I think at this point I would ask to be taken to the vets and put down.

Facade's avatar

Not much different

Serevaetse's avatar

I don’t even want to know! Haha
I would be in quite a bit of pain

Daid in a month.
