What are some natural remedies you use and would recommend?

Asked by NewZen (3502points) November 5th, 2009

I like honey and lemon for sore throats. I drink chamomile tea to put me to sleep, and put lavender under my pillow for dreamless and restful sleep. I try to eat a lot of dried fruit (you know why) and believe that chicken soup is actually antibiotic.

You?

I use honey in tea and its also a weight loss supplement (helps stimulate your metabolism). I really like herbal teas and I use lavender to help me sleep. The basics I suppose. I grew up with my grandfather raising bees so I’m used to raw honey which is delicious. A friend of mine runs a company in the central valley of California that produces raw milk which helps your immune system, clears your skin, doesnt make you gain weight, and all sorts of other things. Oh, i just thought of something else too…I use raw sugar in everything I make. Not for any known “rememdy” reasons though…I would recommend the raw milk though, its amazing. :)

I gargle warm salt water for sore throats, and believe that firm massages help when I get colds.

I take valerian to help me fall asleep on those nights when I’m having a hard time turning my brain off.

Toothpaste on bee stings. Works better than anything else! Not sure how natural that is, though!

Also, I’ve used banana peels to get rid of warts. My son and husband each had a wart on a finger, so each night I’d use medical tape to cover the wart with a square of banana peel. In the morning, I took it off. After only a couple of days, the warts started to break down. In a few weeks, they were completely gone and haven’t come back.

Does Rum count as “natural?”

Aloe Vera is great for the skin.

Raw eggs and Budweiser for a hangover,,,,slurp’em down and chase’m with a Bud….and don’t drink so damned much!

Liberal applications of time seems to cure pretty much anything that ails me, and it’s 100% natural. Time does have some significant side-effects, though, including fatigue, joint pain, and memory loss. Use with caution

Rescue Remedy is a miracle worker for me. Even the Red Cross is reported to use it in crisis situations. It is a tincture made out of particular flower essences. The idea is to reduce stress. It is only 9.00 a bottle.

I also know lots of good teas especially for women’s health.

SpatzieLover's avatar

Aloe for skin care and drinking for health
Epsom Salts for bathing when my muscles hurt
Tea for everything (sleepytime, cold care, waking up-etc)

Oh and I also know for a fact that sniffing salt water helps dramatically when congested and when getting a sore throat.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@RedPowerLady So does a neti pot with saline for congestion or infection

RedPowerLady's avatar

@SpatzieLover Ya that is the fancy way of doing it!!! I just use a plain old cup of salt water but I know many people find the neti pot easier to use.

bright_eyes00's avatar

@RedPowerLady @SpatzieLover My friends dad uses nettle all the time. It tastes horrible but works wonders.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@RedPowerLady ooohhh I use the face over steam method, too. The neti helps those of us in climates that are prone to create sinus pressure and infections. Steaming isn’t portable ;)

bright_eyes00's avatar

@SpatzieLover @RedPowerLady I just realized neither of you were talking about nettle…sorry my bad

SpatzieLover's avatar

@bright_eyes00 Nettle is in some of my teas ;) the neti pot is not used for tea, though ;D

reacting_acid's avatar

@Val123 I agree! And it works so well!

Val123's avatar

@reacting_acid At least you forget what ailed ya!

Tea tree oil. It’s an antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. works on people and pets. Kills a cold sore before it gets started, and no pimple can stand up to it,etc, etc. also kills a sore throat but does not taste so good, great for any kind of mouth sores, and many skin conditions.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@bright_eyes00 That’s okay. I was referring to nettle when I said I know great women’s teas. Never heard of a man taking it regularly but it is good for allergies too. I love the taste of it though.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@SpatzieLover I just put the salt water in a cup and sniff. Then spit it out. No steam pot or neti pot needed. But it is SO nasty!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@faye Also good for athlete’s feet.

White willow is nature’s aspirin, and helps me with arthritic aches and pains. Ginger is good for nausea, and mint helps to settle an upset stomach too. I put baking soda on bee stings to draw out the venom and stinger. For a sore throat, I gargle with peroxide and salt in warm water.

faye's avatar

I don’t think you should gargle with peroxide. We quit using it in nursing on wounds as it destroys the delicate new tissue. it might also damage your throat a little. go with my tea tree oil!

ccrow's avatar

I use peppermint tea for an upset stomach, also candied ginger. But not at the same time.
@RedPowerLady , the last time I tried the salt water it made everything worse; dunno why, I’ve done it before w/no problem.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@ccrow how did you use it and what type of sickness did you have and how did it make it worse?

MagsRags's avatar

tea tree oil is also good for fungal nail infections.

Someone had a dog who was afraid of storm and I was trying to think of Rescue Remedy, if it was someone commenting here, the name of the stuff is Rescue Remedy!. I don’t really take any one thing but I try to incorporate all of the “superfoods” into my diet. We eat blueberries everyday and lots of spinach and yoghurt. We use tea tree oil for mozzie bites and as a repellant as well.

Aboriginal people eat lots of bush tucker that is supposed to be good for you, Kakadu plum is one and I like them but they eat the green ants when they have a cold or flu, my husband does too, but they bite so I am chicken!

ccrow's avatar

@RedPowerLady I had a bad cold w/ sinus congestion. I used warm salt water like you said, ‘snorting’ it & spitting it out. My sinus ached afterwards, for a couple of days. I was afraid I was getting a sinus infection(NOT fun) but it subsided.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@ccrow You probably had too much salt in there, lol. Sorry it’s not funny but i’ve done it before myself and ick. Or you snorted it too hard. It can’t actually make it worse (too much salt can burn though) because salt and water can’t hurt you in that way, if that makes sense. In fact the salt is antibacterial and will help clean you out. I don’t know that your sinus aching is correlated with the salt water regimen. You should talk to your doc about it next time you go in just to find out.

Val123's avatar

I drank salt water the day before my wedding. I have no idea why. But boy was I sick

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Val123 you aren’t supposed to drink the stuff… lol

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Val123 You are so sihwieeeees…you don’t drink salt water!

Val123's avatar

I know you guys! I think I didn’t want to get married…..

RedPowerLady's avatar

@Val123 Well that is the most interesting way to stop a wedding I’ve ever heard.

SolitaryMan's avatar

An old man gave me a home remedy that he said prevents AIDS; ” Sit on your ass and keep your mouth shut ”...........I guess that only leaves dirty needles to contend with.

Val123's avatar

@RedPowerLady Didn’t work! But we divorced 10 years later so…oh well…
