For the women: Does a mans chin and jaw line effect whether he's more attractive?

Asked by jdogg (871points) November 7th, 2009 from iPhone

If so, how much, or if not what does?

I like a nice strong chin but it’s not a deal-breaker by any means.

Agreed with @gemiwing. It’s a positive but you can be attractive without a defined jaw too of course.

a strong jaw is hotttt. :)

Not really, except that a cleft chin looks like a butt to me. Not my thing.

DominicX's avatar

Maybe. For me, it’s part of the whole facial structure that affects attractiveness.

@Haleth My boyfriend has a slight cleft chin. Doesn’t seem to bother me, though.

I know I’m not a woman, but generally when I see an attraction question aimed at women, it’s usually just aimed at people attracted to men.

I love cleft chins! there are as many combinations of face that result in a good looking man as there are woman who are looking. i love eyes and lips-Nicholas Cage lips.

I love a solid jaw line. A slight cleft, even better. But I agree, no butt-chins.

Not a deal breaker, no. Just something nice to look at.

I do like it to be more masculine-looking than not. Even on the boyish men whose looks I tend to favor.

A nice jaw line is always a plus. And certainly it is best if a man does not have a receding chin. If he does, he might be well advised to grow a beard.

“A cleft chin, chin cleft, dimple chin or a chin dimple is a dimple on the chin. It is a Y-shaped fissure on the chin with an underlying bony peculiarity.[1] The chin fissure follows the fissure in the lower jaw bone resulted from the incomplete fusion of the left and right halves of the jaw during the embryonal and fetal development.[2]

This is an inherited trait in humans, where the dominant gene causes the cleft chin while the recessive genotype presents without a cleft. However, it is also a classic example for variable penetrance[3] with environmental factors or a modifier gene possibly affecting the phenotypical expression of the actual genotype.”Wikipedia

@Darwin – Yes! I thought Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode looked his best when he had that long hair and a beard covering his weak chin during the Songs of Faith and Devotion era.

I’m gonna take the liberty to answer this question.

YES. There are few things more attractive than a nice, solid jawline.

a strong jaw line has to be one of the most masculine(not to mention, sexiest) things ever! to me, its in the same category as the “v” at the hips for a guy. its super hot but it definetely isnt a must, just a plus! :) just thinking about it is making me drool. lmao

A stronger jawline is the result of a high level of testosterone, testosterone levels are responsible for physical characteristics that resemble good genes to women, (subconsciously) women are attracted to men that will pass on the best genes for her offspring. Personal preferences or not, there is a big chance you will be more attracted to a square jawed man.

Ps. For all the men/boys who are about to go and get testosterone shots after reading this, the jaw (and most other physical attributes affected by testosterone levels) only develop during puberty, so get yourself a time machine while you’re at it.

Chalk up another vote for square jaws… oh and cleft chins are super sexy!

A weak chin is a turn off to me.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I’ve observed I have a preference for defined jawlines and not much for weak chinned men and agree with @markyy says as to the underlying origin of the attraction.

sophillyk's avatar

I love a man with a strong jaw, i think it makes a difference, it depends on the rest of the face though i guess.

OutOfTheBlue's avatar

I am not a female but studies have been done on this and facts show that women are far more attracted to strong, defined facial features..

Clair's avatar

Yes. Similar to how women prefer a deeper voice during ovulation. Here is an article that applies to women as well as gay men.

DominicX's avatar

Everyone keeps talking about a “strong jaw”; I guess I don’t know what a “weak jaw” looks like? What does it look like?

mclaugh's avatar

@DominicX a rounder or oval shaped jaw or face..

mclaugh's avatar

@Clair the second photo doesnt work.
