I need help! My fish are dying i think!

Asked by sophillyk (301points) November 8th, 2009

One black one was dead this morning, the other black moore looks like its shedding its skin and the twowhite ones with orange helmets are lying next to each other at the bottom of the tank. They were in a bowl for a week or so but today i bought a 7.1 gallon tank with a filter etc and they have always had live plants, is it possibly some kind of fungal infection and does anyone have any advice?

Well. A bowl is ENTIRELY too small for anything other than a Betta, and usually filter-less.
Was there a filter on the bowl? If not, that could be quite a few problems.

What do you mean by “shedding its skin” and please tell me you let the new tank sit for a while and acclimate before you put the fish in it.

yes i let the tank sit and the filter run for 3 hours, there is also the right amount of drops in to fix the water, the bowl was very large but it didn’t have a filter, i feel so awful now but the pet shop told me they were ok without a filter so long as there were plants and i did regular water changes. I will never make this mistake again. The black moore has what looks like a layer of white covering it and coming off it also trailing behind, it looks as if a layer of skin is shedding off although im aware its probably some kind of infection, is there anything i can get from the shop to make the poor things better?

No. You need to let the tank sit for about a week before you can SAFELY add fish.. It gives it time for the bacteria cycle that happens in tanks start and get going.

It sounds like they could have a bad case of Ich.. but I’m not exactly sure.
Take one of them in a bowl (unless you can take a good picture of it) and take it to a specialty store. If you don’t have one near you, a pet store would be fine too.

They can point out exactly what can help, and how to properly set up your tank for next time.

If you just used tap water instead of distilled water they are probably suffering for the chlorine in the water. A sudden temperature shock could hurt them too. My mom used to float the plastic bag with the fish it it on top of the tank for a few days so they could acclimate to the temperature.

Oi! I didn’t think about asking that.
I keep assuming everyone knows

hmm i think i need to find a better pet shop because the guy there was telling me bowls are fine no filter or pump needed etc. My poor fish!

i put the aquasafe drops in the perfect amount measured and everything

rangerr's avatar

@sophillyk Where did you go? if you don’t mind me asking.
If it wasn’t Petsmart, (which if it is, I’mma be pissed.. they should know better), go there.

Aquasafe works… but it’s still highly recommended to use filtered water. Depending on where you live, tap water can be pretty harsh for animals.

You could even call a pet store and ask them what they think.
If they don’t know, try another one.

It’d save driving time.. Unless you can upload a picture or give a bit more description, I can’t help you further with the infection.

i went to fish bowl its in fulham, london

ill try to describe it better, i have 4 fish, 2 goldfish, 1 black moore and a sucker

the sucker is fine scooting around the tank happily, the black moore has a white layer of something on its skin peeling off, the other 2 goldfish look fine, but they are listless and lying together at the bottom of the tank not swimming or moving.

i did use filtered water through my brita kettle im not sure if this would have made a difference but i thought it would be better.

I have no idea about UK stores.

It sounds like a tank problem, if the other goldfish are all having problems.

That’s better than tap water.

Take them in to another pet store. It sounds like the moore has Ich, or possibly an internal infection.

thanks so much! :)

Not a problem. Good luck and let me know what they say!

Sounds fungal to me. It’s not your fault.

If what your describing on your moore looks like this or this it is most likely ich. Here is some useful information for fish with ich and ich prevention:
one
two
Other than that good luck and take rangerr’s advice he knows what he is talking about.

Thanks! That’s great, im going to the shop tomorrow to get some meds ill tell you all what happened thanks for the help!

Definitely sounds like ich. We had that happen when we first got our tank, and had to get a treatment for the fish immediately, but we did lose one fish. My husband knows fish and recognized it immediately, so we got to them in time.
