What is loneliness?

Asked by tyrantxseries (4722points) November 10th, 2009

I was reading the answers in this question, and it got me thinking about how people at work say they are lonely certain times, and how my therapist keeps pestering me about it…...
I’ve googled it and got the definition of it but I still don’t understand it.
I don’t think I’ve ever experienced this…

I live alone, I have a few friends I see every couple of months, I don’t usually talk to the people in my apartment building, I never talk to coworkers outside of work

but the best part of my day is getting home and no one is there, I turn my cell off, and love every minute of it.

any help with this is appreciated.

Being alone is a state of environment. Being lonely is a state of mind.

Lonliness is very different than being alone. You can be lonely in a room full of people.

that doesn’t make sense. and both were in the definition
what is ir like?
can you describe the feeling/state of mind?

@tyrantxseries It sounds like you are alone a lot, but you’re not lonely. That’s a good thing.

lol, no it’s not

emptiness, right at the very core of your chest – and the realization that no one around you can do anything to fix it.

Being lonely is an empty feeling like @smack said. But being alone is just being alone. Hope this helps you understand the difference.

Geez, therapists are annoying.

So you just want to know what it feels like?

It feels like crap. It feels like you could scream, set off fireworks and dress up like a tomato and no one would even notice because you don’t exist. Being lonely feels like a sucking feeling in your chest while at the same time feeling hot in the neck/back of head.

@gemiwing at my lowest lonely point, i once thought that i could stand in the middle of this busy hotel lobby that i was currently staying at, pull out a gun, and shoot myself in the temple – and no one would notice.

A twelve pack of Pabst and three episodes of Golden Girls a night.

I’ve been feeling pangs of loneliness tonight. It’s needing to impart something and not having someone available who can receive it.

Feeling pain when being alone.

Lonliness is yearning for other people to be around you, but no one is.
