Does anyone have any suggestions for modern singers that are in the realm of Otis Redding?

Asked by lbinva78 (553points) November 11th, 2009

I’ve been listening to Otis Redding a lot lately, and I find myself wondering why I never see anyone like this live. Is this style of music a lost art, or am I missing out? Does anyone know of a current artist that sings with this much soul and passion? I would love to hear some suggestions…

No such animal. But for a white guy, Delbert McClinton is pretty good.

Albeit an unpopular opinion, Amy Winehouse’s album has some serious soul going despite her personal problems.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic I agree with the Wino thing… she is great. But by Otis I thought the OP was going for a male vocalist.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic I actually love Back to Black. I know the tabloids have a field day with her personal issues, but Amy Winehouse has been one of my personal favorites for a while now. I love that her music is reminiscent of the style that made me fall in love with music in the first place.

Also, Al Green.
While not new, if you don’t like Al Green, you might just be hopeless.

@Dr_C I’m certainly not opposed to female artist suggestions. I apologize that I did not specify in my question. Soul is soul- no gender bias here.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic Oh please, Al Green is on the same playlist as Otis Redding. I have no problem finding amazing recordings, I’m just a little disappointed that it’s so difficult to find modern artists that move me like that.

@lbinva78 Beck: Midnite Vultures.
Get this soon.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic I actually love the song Debra… but it’s still not the same. Don’t get me wrong, I totally dig Beck. But I can’t quite put him in the same box as Otis, or Al Green or Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin…

@lbinva78 No one can be put in that group who wasn’t a part of that group to start with.
There’s good stuff to be heard though.
For example, Ween’s “Chocolate and Cheese” album has incredible soul in songs like “Spirit of ‘76”.
Old school soul can still be found in some unlikely places.

John Legend or early Ben Harper.

@aprilsimnel I almost forgot about John Legend. Thanks for reminding me; I have actually heard a couple of his songs that I thought were amazing. I’m only vaguely familiar with Ben Harper, but I was always under the impression that his style is a bit folky. Not that I don’t like folk music, but at the moment I guess I’m more interested in learning about artists who sing like it’s all coming from their guts.

One of my favorite John legend songs happens to be in a Christmas compilation i got at starbucks a couple of years ago and kinda reminds me of old school soul…

Also.. what do you think of Rufus Wainwright?

lbinva78's avatar

Rufus Wainwright, he was on the I Am Sam soundtrack, right?

Dr_C's avatar

@lbinva78 yup… singing “across the universe”
also look for “what are you doing new year’s eve”

Try Van Hunt or Terence Trent D’Arby…it’s really hard to compare to one of my faves “Try A Little Tenderness” though, that’s why he’s so awesome in his own right…I’d try staying old schoolband try out Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder; Al Green was a good suggestion.

I’d like to add to that: B.B. King, Etta James, James Brown (of course!), Sam Cooke, and in more modern R&B: Raheem Devaughn, Maxwell, Me’Shell N’Dege Ocello, Musiq, D’Angelo, Jamie Lidell, Jill Scott, and India Arie.

Bill Withers and Amos Lee

All these answers have been thoughtful and written with the best of intent, but as yet I have seen no Otis Redding in anyone’s posts including my own. He was iconic, and I can think of no one. @sndfreQ sure points out some great artists, though.
