I'm a little embarassed to ask this, but I need to know for my daughter: Do you know of any home remedies for yeast infection?

Asked by Val123 (12734points) November 12th, 2009

I googled, but didn’t find much of anything. My daughter is broke and has no health insurance. I’ll go pick some OTC stuff up, but we were wondering if anyone has any ideas.

HOME remedies? Not really. I’d go get some OTC stuff. It’s not expensive & it does the trick. I don’t know that anything concocted at home would do as good as anything that’s specifically made for a yeast infection. That’d be your best bet, I’m sure.

boric acid powder I know the word “acid” sounds horrible, but it’s primarily used for eye wash packed into empty 00 gelatin capsules and inserted into the vagina is an effective treatment for yeast, but it usually takes longer to work

I found this online: I love herbal remedy sites

Helpful herbs and supplements for this condition.

Aloe vera juice
Type: Internal
Purposes: Aloe vera is well recognized for being a safe treatment for a variety of ailments. The ancient Egyptians chose aloe vera to treat wounds from battles and heal infections. Not only can aloe vera be an antiseptic but also be an anti-inflammatory. In addition, the juice from the plant can increase the white blood cells capability to exterminate yeast cells.

Kolorex
Type: Internal
Purposes: Patented herbal formula that contains horopito (pseudowintera colorato) and anise extracts. Horopito has been in existence in its original form for 65 million years. The main active ingredient of Horopito is polygodial. Besides being effective against yeasts, polygodial also contains powerful antioxidant flavonoids.

Olive Leaf
Type: Internal
Purposes: Used since biblical times, Olive Leaf Extract, just from its symbol, gives you a sense of being protected. It is a powerful way to fend off harmful toxins & expedite healing of infections caused from microbes.

Pau d’arco
Type: Internal
Purposes: Also known as lapacho or taheebo. Has an agent that acts as antibacterial, as well as antifungal. Some people may not actually improve from drinking Pau d’arco tea. If that is the case with you, change over to clove tea. Even if Pau d’arco tea does help, it’s wise to switch between Pau d’arco and clove tea, anyway. Clove tea will assist in healing different areas than Pau d’arco; Pau d’arco will also act differently than clove.
Dosage: Boil 1 quart distilled water with 2 tablespoons of Pau d’arco. Boil the mixture for five minutes. Cool it down and then place it in the refrigerator with the tea leaves in. Strain the mixture prior to use. Drink three to six cups daily.

Maitake Tea
Type: Internal
Purposes: Maitake Tea makes a good substitute if Pau d’arco proves to contra beneficial for removing toxins. Since different strains of candida grow quickly because of genetic mutation, a variety of teas will provide a wider range of benefits.

Wild Oregano Oil
Type: Internal
Purposes: This herb is a very potent antibacterial agent. Wild Oregano has been touted as being a natural antibiotic that might even be stronger than prescription antibiotics. As well as being an effective fighter against E-coli and staphylococcus bacteria, it has been said that the oil can kill fungi, as well.

eat lots and lots of yogurt. That’s what my mother had me do when I had my first one.

hannahsugs's avatar

Garlic is also supposed to help

either eaten or…..the other thing.

Val123's avatar

I’ve always simply used hot water. Works pretty much instantly! It’s not working for my daughter this time, though….thanks for all the responses.

I would just use the OTC stuff and be done with it.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

The OTC stuff tends to be very messy and takes up to 7 days to work. I used to get yeast infections all the time right before my period. I don’t have health insurance either so I simply called up my regular doctor, told her what was wrong, informed her I had no insurance, and she called in a prescription for me at walmart. It was generic for Dyflucan and it only costs about $4.00. Can your daughter try that solution?

Val123's avatar

@ItalianPrincess1217 I suppose she could try….

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I believe there’s also a 3 day cream, too. That’d be faster than the 7 day ones.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@Val123 If she has a doctor she usually goes to, they should be willing to just phone in a medicine for her. They’re usually pretty understanding when you don’t have insurance. Good luck :( I know how annoying those damn things can be!

Supacase's avatar

@ItalianPrincess1217 They do have three day treatments as @jbfletcherfan mentioned. They also have 1 day treatments. They’re not that messy anymore – most use vaginal suppositories for treatment and an external cream for instant itch relief. Generic is as good as name brand and much less expensive.

It wouldn’t hurt to try the doctor’s office. It really depends on the doctor. My mom’s doctor will call things in for her without seeing her, but mine will make me come in first every time.

I just googled home remedies and there are a lot of them out there. Yogurt seem to be the most popular as it was on every page I visited. They recommend internal & external applications twice a day. How to get it in there? Fill a tampon applicator with yogurt then insert as you would a tampon. Messy? Freeze it first. Cold when you insert it, but they said it actually relieves the burning sensation quite nicely. They suggest eating a lot of yogurt as well. (Different containers, please!)

Peeling a garlic clove, tying a string to it and inserting it is said to work very well, too. Some said a new clove every two hours, others said a new one each morning and night.

Boric acid suppositories, tea tree oil on a tampon, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide were also mentioned on multiple sites.

Val123's avatar

@Supacase I’m thinking you might want to be sure the yogurt you use has the active, whatever, bacteria. It’ll tell you on the container
You guys…thank you for your ideas, and thank you for not laughing at me!

Interesting how the guys seem to be staying out of this! We’re all alone! Let’s talk about them!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Val123 Of course we’re not going to laugh about it. (well, there was one smart ass. There always has to be ONE). I’d venture to say that every woman on here has had this infection at some time in their life & it’s no laughing matter. I hope she gets some relief soon. The best of luck to her.

Val123's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Yeah, and smart ass was a male, too, of course. It wouldn’t be bad except that I know guys are seeing this too. It’s not the same thing as discussing female-specific issues just with women. (And notice how so much of the time these things…yeast infection, and UTI’s come about because of sexual intercourse?! It’s a fummer (as my grandson used to say instead of “bummer.”)

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Val123 Yeah, a lot of what we women have to go through are “fummers”. LOL

Val123's avatar

I wonder if men would be so sex crazy if they had to deal with 2 days of painful fummerings half the time after they had sex! I kinda wonder if they might be the ones developing convenient headaches sometimes!

rooeytoo's avatar

I just saw the tea tree oil on a tampon, that stuff stings like a son of a gun! But it does take the itch out of insect bite quickly, so if you can stand the initial burn it would probably be very effective. But I am chicken, I don’t think I would try that one.

The frozen yogurt sounds like a soothing winner to me.

faye's avatar

I’ve used tea tree oil mixed with water as a douche and it worked without stinging. But in canada caneston is cheap and otc. there is a 1 day treatment.

fireinthepriory's avatar

Hydrogen peroxide! Take about two tablespoons and put it in ¼ cup of warm water. Use it externally and internally. The reason that the bacteria in yogurt cure yeast infections is that they produce hydrogen peroxide, which kills yeast. I’ve never used an OTC yeast infection medication, always hydrogen peroxide. It’s cheap and it works really well (usually only takes one time.)

Val123's avatar

@fireinthepriory thank you! That sounds really logical to me! I’ll be she has that on hand, too! I got her OTC meds, but they’re 7 day. I had no idea there were different days because I’ve never used the stuff. Like I said, really warm, almost hot water has always done the trick for me, and pretty much took care of it instantly, but I’ll remember that about the peroxide. I’m think the peroxide would help dry the area out, and yeast don’t survive in dry areas, kind of like bacteria…

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Whoa…I’m just reading some of these remedies. I’d be very careful as to what I put up in such a sensitive place!

Val123's avatar

A hell, @jbfletcherfan ! Like penises and things, you mean?! I think them Hoo Ha’s are pretty tough cookies!

fireinthepriory's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Yeah, I was wary, too… But after reading the list of ingredients on an OTC yeast infection remedy (For example, Monistat’s ingredients are: miconazole nitrate 2%, nonmedicinal: benzoic acid, cetyl alcohol, isopropyl myristate, polysorbate 60, potassium hydroxide, propylene glycol, purified water and stearyl alcohol), I decided to try it the old-fashioned way. Don’t want all that stuff in my vag, plus I heard that yeast infection cream burns. I have also tried garlic, but it didn’t work as well and it was irritating after a day or so. I promise that such a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide will not burn your vag. It doesn’t burn at all! If it does, you didn’t dilute the H2O2 enough. My vag is doing fine and I’ve done it several times. :)

@Val123 “like penises and things” ROFL!

@fireinthepriory When you say internally are you talking about swallowing or inserting vaginally?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Eat some yogurt. It re-populates the commensal bacteria and works like a charm.

fireinthepriory's avatar

@RedPowerLady Ooh, good distinction, I mean inserting vaginally. I don’t think that swallowing hydrogen peroxide would be very good for you!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Val123 LOLLLLLLL…. what a hoot! Noooo…penises are very safe. ;-) or should that be peni?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@fireinthepriory You have a good point there. Even the OTCs have chemicals in them, of course.

sliceswiththings's avatar

My grandma (who found out about my last yeast infection, thanks Mom) suggested eating yogurt with rice that will “keep it around long enough to do some good.”

akm's avatar

For a yeast infection, for any type of infection actually, I would support the commensal bacteria (good bacteria). This would mean not consuming anything that kills them, such as mold, garlic, oregano, and antibiotics. It also means eating foods that nourish them. I have learned a lot about this from Paul Yanick, Jr., author of Quantum Medicine, who has researched ways to support the commensal bacteria.
