What was the wonderful new way of sharing questions Fluther implemented last night?

Asked by Dog (25152points) November 13th, 2009

Last night Fluther flashed a message stating they would be going down for maintenance and would be adding a whole new way to share questions.

Has anyone else figured out what it is and what other clever changes that our Founders and Tim might have added?

I don’t know but it probably has something to do with AstroChuck. It usually does. XD

I just noticed that when someone is composing an answer for a question, it shows a little pencil by it on the front fluther page.

jackm's avatar

i wanna know now!

Dog's avatar

@Tink1113 That is not new though.

prasad's avatar

Waiting to see.

It didn’t flash for me, I don’t know or wouldn’t have known unless you raised the question.

Tink's avatar

@Dog Its not? It’s the first time I see it. It also tells you how many people are writing. I am probably late at it though.

I don’t use the link much, but I don’t remember being able to share questions with other Fluther users just by typing in their username.

Click on the “Send to a friend” link and you see a two column option.
Like I said, I haven’t used this link much anyways, so this may have been there all along.

@fireside, maybe your were a beta tester! I know I was for a couple of now-fully implemented features.

fireside's avatar

@aprilsimnel – Actually, I was a beta tester. I just haven’t been around lately since I got married and had a new family to get to know. (not to mention a ton of work to do during the days!)

aprilsimnel's avatar

Wow, congrats on getting married! And having work!

Cupcake's avatar

Yay! Congrats @fireside! ;)

Dog's avatar

OH! It is the “Send to a Friend!”

Awesome!

(I am not sure why I did not see that. Damn I need coffee,)

robmandu's avatar

Huh… I’ve been seeing “Send to a Friend” for… well, for ever, I think.

Dog's avatar

@robmandu Damn. I thought that must be it.

@Dog My best guess would be a ‘share on twitter’ checkbox (like we already have for facebook + there is already a Fluther twitter that does exactly the same for all questions).

I’m not ruling out that something could have gone wrong and the Fluther gods decided to implement it later, or that the message was not intended to be shown (it could have been an old message from when they implemented the facebook checkbox earlier, or it could have been a regular maintenance that was using the wrong message).

Dog's avatar

Oh WAIT!

I see that they moved to the side by our profiles:

“Ask a Question”
“My Account”

That is new too right?

(I wonder how many old features I will “discover” searching for new ones.)

J0E's avatar

@Dog That’s not new. I think it’s the send a question to someone on Fluther, when you click the “Send to a friend” link. it sure would be nice if they explained it to us.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Wait, where is this “Send to a friend” link? I don’t see it.

J0E's avatar

Right next to “Follow Question.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Oh. I thought that had been around for a while. I guess not!

Dog's avatar

@J0E I suspected as much.

J0E's avatar

It has been around for a while, what’s new is the “Using Fluther” column after you click “Send to friend”.

markyy's avatar

@J0E I guess it deserved an update as most of us never clicked on it before! So what happens when you send it to a user? Does it appear as a comment, mail, something else?

J0E's avatar

idk, let’s find out, send me this question

fireside's avatar

lol, i just sent it to markyy to see what he finds out.

edit: now i sent it to you too, J0E

J0E's avatar

Appears in “Questions for You” and shows who sent it.

fireside's avatar

@Cupcake – Congrats to you too! : )

@aprilsimnel – thanks!

markyy's avatar

@fireside What did you sent me? I only see:
> Has anyone here ever had a septoplasty and/or turbinate reduction operation?
> What should I look for in an employement recruiter?
Neither one was asked by @fireside. I don’t have a comment from you, I don’t have a mail from you, are you sure you sent it?

fireside's avatar

@markyy – yeah, i definitely sent it. I got a banner that said “You just sent this to markyy” – I don’t know why it didn’t appear. Maybe that is a bug that has prevented them from announcing it?

markyy's avatar

Maybe there is a ‘don’t feed the trolls’ safety check that prevented it from being sent to me.

Dog's avatar

Hey! That is awesome! We can send Questions to other users!
I am not sure when I will use it but I really like that it is there!

Thanks @J0E Lurve!

::edit:: I just thought of cool ways to use that new feature!

markyy's avatar

It sure is a nice way to be passive aggressive on Fluther! Fluther will slowly turn into a family thanksgiving dinner. Just kidding, the glass is half full.

Hi all,

Yes, you indeed discovered it: A way to send questions to people on the site.

We were releasing this late last night, and the blog will be out shortly. As far as we know, it’s working properly now.

Also, we added the pencil icon (so you can see how many people are composing) to the iphone view.

J0E's avatar

@ben Last time I checked “Send to Friends” wasn’t on the mobile site, is that something that will happen in the future?

Dog's avatar

Yay on iPhone composing pencil!

@J0E Yeah, we’ve neglected the mobile site quite a lot, but I’ll go ahead and add it in this afternoon.

ben's avatar

@J0E Should be working on your iPhone now. :)

aprilsimnel's avatar

Cool beans!

Did I miss anything?

valdasta's avatar

If anyone is still following this: I want to know how to send a question to another Flutherite.
I want Fish Guts Dale to answer my question about “What’s the story behind your Fluther name?”

Dog's avatar

@valdasta Look at the question above. See the “Send to a friend” button? Push it then you can choose to email or just send to another used by name. It is awesome no?

valdasta's avatar

@Dog Thanks. I also found another way to do it, too (probably the long way). I right clicked my question, copied the short cut, went to the desired user’s wall and pasted it in their comment box…Zee long vay, ya?
