Girls, who do you look up to as a female role model?

Asked by Lacroix (537points) November 15th, 2009

A friend suggested to me the other day that girls with male role models may tend to become more masculine, and girls with female role models tend to be more feminine.

So, girls, which females do you idealize, be it in looks, accomplishments, or general attitude? How have they affected you as a person?

I idolized my high school math teacher. She was one of those people who was so happy and cheery all the time and now I’m just like her. My attitude is almost identical to hers. I guess people tend to act like their idols

I don’t really have anyone I aim to be like.

Katharine Hepburn was an icon/role model for me as a young woman. Most of her characters were smart and successful and stood up for themselves. In her personal life, she didn’t expend energy on pretending to be something she wasn’t; ie, a good little wife and mother. She wore pants when hardly anyone in the public eye did. And she had gorgeous bone structure that allowed her to age gracefully without a lot of makeup and frou frou.

I’m like @rangerr I never really had a specific role model I looked up to. As I get older I wish I looked like my younger self, thinner and fewer wrinkles. When I was young I think I cared about meeting my parents expections. Also, my boyfriend during high school, had older sister-in-laws who dressed really cool, so I copied that to some extent, it where I get my style from more or less.

@MagsRags And yet she was considered plain in her time. Never got that one.

Would you say that the best parts, such as title characters/heroes/most interesting principal actors are given to men? I haven’t seen a female character that didn’t annoy me or fail to interest me in quite some time.

I can honestly say that I have never idolized any women, or any men for that matter. Some women through history I admire and/or look up to: Alice Paul, Margaret Sanger, Mary Wollstonecraft, Tahirih, Laura Ingalls-Wilder, and my amazing grandmother.

My Grandmother, the sweetest, kindest, bravest, most loving woman I’ve ever known. i miss her terribly. she never judged people, and had such a huge heart.

No one really, male or female.

Tina Fey for dominating in a classically male genre, Sarah Vowell for writing in a way that makes me feel better about being a nerd, Terry Gross for always asking the question you didn’t even know you had, and my darling mother for all around greatness.

I have a lot of women role models all for different reasons. Most of the famous ones are singers because that has been my own passion for many years. For example: Barbra Streisand (first and foremost!), Cher, Dolly Parton, Anastacia, Patti Russo (most underrated vocalist EVER in my opinion), Lea Salonga, Ruthie Henshall, Dusty Springfield, Judith Durham, Maria Ewing, Renee Fleming, Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige my list could go on…

As far as non famous role models are concerned it would have to be my Grandmother (my dad’s mother). She makes me feel safe.

I don’t really “do” role models, but I do look to family and older friends for social cues.

Although I like many female authors, I wouldn’t say I look up to them, rather that they inspire me. Is that drawing too fine of a line?

@drdoombot, forget Wonder Woman; when I was young, I always looked up to Catwoman and Batman.
