What are the best vintage shops in/around los angeles?

Asked by Sunsetseast (85points) November 16th, 2009

I’m Somewhat new to the city…slowly checking out vintage shops throughout the area (using yelp!), but wondering which ones you flutherers might recommend. In the market for furniture and clothing.

The melrose/ fairfax flee market on Sun can be amazing.

There is another flee market in Pasadena on the 1st Sun of each month @ the Rose Bowl but I don’t remember it’s name.

St Vincent DePaul has the best furniture so cheap! It’s a little off the beaten path- a little South east of downtown off the 5.

There is another store on LaBrea south of merose- maybe rag time (?). They have a grab bag event in the parking lot on Sat or Sun I never made there but have heard it was good.

I’ll let you know if I think of somewhere else.

Check out the 3rd Street Promenade, lots of fun shops.

One shop that comes to mind for vintage clothing in southern California is Elsewhere in Orange – I haven’t been to her shop but she is a colleague, and she is knowledgeable and ethical. I belong to the Vintage Fashion Guild – you might want to post in their visitor forums to see if there’re any other VFG members with a brick and mortar store in your area. It’s also a good site for information and inspiration.

I like to go to Fairfax because there are two good consignment shops in walking distance (between Melrose and the Farmers Market). Out of the Closet is on the east side of the street a little south of across from Canters and the simply titled Thrift Store is on the west side, north of Canters, but south of Melrose. I like the Thrift Store best, but for some reason it’s really easy to miss so you have to keep your eyes peeled for it. Out of the Closet donates to aids research, and there are a few of them sprinkled around LA.

Go east to La Brea and there’s Jet Rag which tends to bit a bit pricey for consignment (and tends to have snotty employees) but does an excellent job of getting unique kitschy stuff and always has a wide collection of good coats and leather jackets.

@kellylet I haven’t been to the Rose Bowl thing yet. Last I heard they charged $8 for admittance I’m not one to pay to spend money. I’ve heard there’s a way to sneak in but I don’t know what it is.

@fundevogel Jet rag…I think that was the place I was thinking of.

I agree Out of the Closet is good also.

Pasadena is HUGE! They do charge but go at least once. They have a whole flea market with collectibles, furniture, some random stuff, some really different exciting stuff but then all the way in the back they have a separate area filled with piles of clothing. It was almost too much. I was exhausted when I left. One last note- if/ when you go don’t wear white or flip flops I remember it being really dusty.
