What goals do you have in life?

Asked by mowens (8403points) November 16th, 2009

What goals do you have in life? What do you want to get out of life?

I had simple goals. First it was graduate from High School. Then it was obtain a bachelors degree. Buy my own first car, be financially independent, I want a family, and I want to make 100k a year by the time I am 30. (i’m in the Midwest, it is more impressive) But, I am running out of goals! The only goal I have left to achieve is to start making 100k a year in the next 4 years. I don’t think I will make it, it is more sort of a race between a friend and I. Friendly competition if you will.

But, I fear that since I have achieved all of my goals… I won’t have purpose in life! So I need some new ones. What goals have you had in life? What did you achieve, or not achieve? What do you think some good goals for someone in there mid-twenties?

Eventually you’ll find that your goals will be directly tied to those you love (and who love you). Perhaps some goals may involve helping those less fortunate. Either way, I doubt you’ll run out of goals.

Currently I hope to watch my daughter become whatever she becomes (and help along the way); I plan to grow old with my wife and spend as much time with her as I can; I hope to carve out more free time to just “be” – enjoy life.

There’s always financial and job goals, but they’re ultimately window dressing.

Very true. I am not actually a material person, I just want to feel as though I have achieved a status in my career where I am coveted, and needed. The only measurable way that I can see is by money. Plus, with more money I can take care of my parents in their advanced years.

I would love to have a son or a daughter. I always wanted a huge family… because I come from a very large family. (dad has 6 brothers and sisters, my mom has 10) I love big families.

The biggest problem I had with being gay was realizing that I would probably never be able to have 7+ kids. I still have thoughts of just finding a girl, and settling down and telling her what the deal is. I want a lot of kids, I won’t ever cheat, It’ll be fun.

But that isn’t in the cards for me, and it breaks my heart. But, I may be able to adopt a child, and I will have nothing but love for it.

– Get my degree
– Get a real job (no more being a waitress, yay)
– Become financially stable/independent
– Buy a house
– Pay off student loans
– Make my house comfortable
– Get married
– Have kids
– Travel to various places (a list of its own)
– Try archery
– Try fencing
– Quit smoking
– Have my own darkroom
– Display my photos (i.e. gallery)
– Sell my photos
– Do something important before I die

To stop Fluthering and do something productive with the afternoon. (I’m only doing short-term goals at the moment!)

@MissAnthrope What do you mean do something important?

@mowens: Adoption is a great route to go (my daughter is adopted). My friend and his boyfriend have three sons (all adopted). I think they’re planning on a fourth. Hopefully you live in a State where adoption for a gay couple is a viable option.

I would like to share unconditional love for an appreciable span in this lifetime. Otherwise, I have an education, a career I love, and a son who’s turned out pretty well. I am very healthy, despite not being in the best of fitness; and I can make ends meet, despite not being able to own my own home in the state with the highest cost if living. So improving fitness and having greater income and owning my own home would also be nice.

I have absolutely loads… I read ‘The Succes Principles’ by Jack Canfield and wrote down 100 goals to start with… (this was 4 years ago) and I achieved..I think I got up to 37…it might have been more… then the list grew to about 140… and I had my son and I’ve not looked at the list since… but one of the ones I always remember is that I would love to swim with dolphins by the time I’m 45 and go on a safari by the time I’m 60.

@mowens – I want to do something important on a global level, just not sure what it is yet. Something big, probably selfless, that is a positive impact, either the in natural world or in people’s lives, or both.

Currently, I want to just make some new friends, find a girl, get a job going and keep my college grades up.

Long term, I want to have a job I love doing, a home and family, and to live life to the fullest experiencing as much as I can. I sense a lot of travel in my future…

I could die content if I received the “Robot Crush” award.

@ratboy If you find out what that is let me know.

Goals are great, but just living in the now is better :)

mowens's avatar

I live in the now, too. I’ve traveled 1000 miles on 5 minutes notice. I love living in the now. :)

My newest goal is to live to be 100, and healthy. I already have everything else I ever wanted, a wonderful husband, 2 great sons, 6 wonderful grandchildren, and a gorgeous house in California, with a pool in the back and a picket fence in the front, and a cute dog that loves me.

My house was paid off, but I got a loan against it for a down payment on my retirement house. I would like to eventually sell the first for enough to cover it all.

I don’t know how to answer your question. Sure I have goals but in general I am always trying to improve myself. Like what can I do to make myself better. Now that I am graduating that obvious next step will be to get a job some where. But will my desires lead me to law school? the State department? Will I start my own business? I don’t know but this is the general direction I want to go. You should ask yourself what your next step would be to improve yourself, and then go for that. If you want to make 100,000 dollars its not difficult you just have to figure out how someone in your position could do this. Or set goals that you think would challenge yourself. You always wanted to learn russian? Whats stopping you from doing that. You want to run a business, start something small so that you can get a taste for it before you blow your life savings and current job on it.

My goals are pretty simple.
-Find a man who respects and loves me. Check
-Get engaged to that man. Check
-Buy a house. Check
-Find one thing everyday that makes me smile. Check
-Start a family and be a wonderful mother to my kids. Will hopefully happen in the near future.

My goal is to enjoy life and get to this finish line.

mowens's avatar

@LKidKyle1985 Kyle… you just want me to learn Russian!

MissAnthrope's avatar

Oh yeah, I should have added in my list that I want to learn as many languages as possible. I can speak (or at least get by in) three languages so far, but I’d love to learn others. I hope to, at the very least, learn Latin before I die.

I want to be fluent in spanish. I want to be able to afford a large amount of ice cream. I want a career I love, and someone to share my life with.
