I need advice about an express diet I am going to make... In three days you lose 7 kg. But is it safe?

Asked by deepdivercwa55m (353points) November 17th, 2009

It’s very simple. I will not eat anything for 3 days and drink lots of water. When I will starve, I will eat a tomato with some oil. But I am an athlete. Is it ok ? will it affect my whole training?

NO. It is not ok. That is the worst idea I have ever heard. I can’t believe you would think it’s a good idea. Do not starve yourself.

Nothing about that seems safe. Especially if you are an athlete.
Where are you going to get the nutrients you need?

Your diet is dumb. Losing that much weight that fast is dumb. You will fail as an athlete if you do.

Of course it isn’t safe.

As an athlete, you burn more calories per day than most people, on average. Your body needs calories to function! When you don’t eat properly, your body will use your muscles for energy as a first resort. Do you want to lose your muscles? Aren’t they critical for an athlete?

Go get the book Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto (it’s an ebook that’s around, if you look for it). Learn to calculate how many calories you burn in a day, and then reduce that number by no more than 15%-20%. You will lose fat at a steady rate without sacrificing your muscle. I’ve been doing this for two months and I have lost 10 pounds. Some weeks I only see a difference of half-a-pound, but at least I know I’m holding on to my precious muscle.

When anyone loses any weight for any diet, the main concern should be to grow muscle and keep it. As an athlete, you should have known this.

Nope. Not only is it stupid it won’t work and will make you gain fat and lose muscle mass.

And why a tomato with oil?

Lightlyseared's avatar

@jfos Why not? It’s just as stupid as the rest of the plan.

Likeradar's avatar

Uh, no.
It’s a stupid and dangerous starvation diet. Your body will go into hyper conserve mode, and as soon as you eat anything your body will store it. And if you continue with training while you’re doing this lame brained diet, the chances are good you’ll pass out or feel like shit.

Bad idea. Why are you doing this?

Sarcasm's avatar

@FutureMemory I think the purpose is to lose weight.

If you are an athlete surely you know more than this about muscles, etc. Train a little more, exercise is great for weight loss. What sport do you play? Passing out while trying to perform could blow your knee, break your shoulder or neck!

Why would you think this is a good idea?

avvooooooo's avatar

No. Not a good idea. Really stupid, actually.

You might lose weight… that you’ll gain back immediately.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

High speed diets are rarely safe and even less frequently successful given a long enough period of time.

I went on a crash diet…. Called the “tonsillectomy diet” where you get part of your throat ripped out and can’t manage to eat anything much for a week. I lost weight, but the moment I started back on solid foods, the weight came right back. That’s what happens any time you stop eating and then start again. And then you’re lucky if you don’t gain back more than you lost.
