I am getting a new computer - what's the best way to transfer data from this one to my new one?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) November 18th, 2009

I currently have a MacBook and should be receiving my MacBook Pro soon. I know they make some USB but I have an external so I don’t know if it’s worth it to spend the extra money on their USB. Any suggestions on how to go about moving over over 2,000 songs and some random files without having to do it in small segments? Would it just be easier to spend the 20 bucks?

If you’re a mac user, why not invest in a MobileMe account? You can upload all your data so you can access from anywhere you have an Internet connection, share your pics or music and download or transfer what you need.

I went ahead and bought the USB-USA cord so I could use the setup and import client. It’ll move files, photos, music, even programs. I’ve used it through three computer switches thus far, and a few family members have used it as well, so it’s been worth it in the long run for me. I also have an external (actually, two, 300BG each) but it’s just more aggravating to try to move things like programs by yourself. With the assistant, you know everything went to the right place. That’s why I liked it.

You didn’t specify what MacBook you have but if it has firewire, just get a firewire cable (very cheap from monoprice), boot the MacBook into target disk mode (by holding the T key when it starts up), plug it into your new MacBook Pro and copy over your data.

Haha, two problems with my post! First of all I meant to write USB-USB, and now @justn has made me realize me that what I meant to SAY was firewire-firewire! What I did definitely included booting my old computer into target disk mode, so I think he’s got it exactly. Works like a charm. :)
