If you could grant someone a wish, what three rules would you have?

You’re the genie. You can grant someone a wish, but there are three rules. What three rules are there?

1. Can’t wish for more wishes.
2. Can’t wish for control over another persons free will.
3. Can’t wish to rule the world. (Nothing good ever comes of that one.)

Can’t wish for more wishes.
Can’t wish me out of existence (so many people might want to do that, I think)
Can’t wish wish for harm to any other person.

1) Whatever you wish for, I gain that object’s weight in gold. (Something like world peace is immeasurable, therefore, I get an infinite amount of gold)
2) Your first wish grants me the power of flight.
3) Your second wish grants me the power of invisibility.

I think I may have done this wrong.

@Sarcasm Not at all! That’s an awesome answer. :D

I only need one:
1. I decide which wish to fulfill. I may reject any wish for any reason and without justification.

1. Your wish will be balanced by an opposing event visited upon someone you love.

@DrasticDreamer Nice question!
Rule 1: No forcing someone to fall in love with them. That should be a strictly natural thing.
Rule 2: No wishing for more wishes. Obviously
Rule 3: Killing or wishing death on someone isn’t allowed. Thats another one of those things that should be strictly caused only naturally.

Aladdin had it right
1. No killing
2. No raising from the dead
3. No falling in love

@Sarcasm An infinite amount of gold is worthless.

1. I will give you three additional wishes, if your first wish is used to free me from my servitude (with my powers intact).
2. You cannot wish me out of existence.
3. You cannot wish yourself to be more powerful or just as powerful as me.

derekfnord's avatar

1. No wishing for more wishes.

2. No wishing for anything whose direct consequence is anything negative. You can wish for something good for someone, but not for something bad. There may be secondary negative consequences of that as events unfold naturally from the point of the wish onward, but they can’t be caused by the wish itself.

3. No wishing for anything that will require ongoing magic to make it stay true. For example, wishing for world peace will result in all existing conflicts stopping, but it won’t keep new ones from arising; you can’t wish for permanent world peace. Wishing to be at your ideal weight will change you once, but it won’t keep you there if you don’t eat/exercise as needed to maintain it; you can’t wish to remain at your ideal weight throughout your lifetime no matter what you do. And so on…

1. Infinite wishes are permitted for the individual entering into this contract (grantee), however duplicate wishes voids previous iteration and returns it to its prior state. Variations of the same wish as determined by grantor (who possesses phenomenal cosmic power and therefore the wisdom to wield that power) will be treated as duplicates. Illegal or immoral wishes as determined by the grantor will result in spontaneous growth of random body parts to grow on the grantees body. Wishes must be unambiguous and for one item/change/person/or unnatural condition as determined by the grantor. Ambiguous requests, such as ‘peace on earth’ constitutes innumerable wishes to innumerable individuals and are therefore exempted from this contract.
2. Wishes cannot be made for direct tangible personal gain or gratification as determined by the grantee. In these cases the personal requested item(s) wished for will be reduced from the grantees inventory/size/holdings/ by a factor of one-half. Wishes for restoration will be treated as new wishes and the same penalty(s) apply. Indirect wishes that would directly benefit the grantee (such as granting infinite wealth to a spouse or offspring as determined by the grantor) will be treated as first party wishes. Further magic to maintain the condition/change will not be permitted.
3. Wishes that alter the current time stream, such as wishing a historical figure a longer life, prevention of the birth of a person, as determined by the grantor (who’s phenomenal cosmic power is able to make that determination) are not permitted. This is not to say that the time stream post wish cannot change for that is the nature of the wish. However the change cannot require further magic to maintain or adjust the stream to maintain the natural flow of events as a consequence of the wish. This category is the only one that has it’s own penalty not inflicted by the grantor.

a The Genie (Grantor) reserves the right to review any and all wishes to determine compliance with restrictions as set forth in the terms and conditions as set forth in the contract. Appeals are not permitted.

b The Grantor reserves the right to alter the terms of this agreement in the event the Grantee abuses the wishes as determined by the Grantor.

c The Grantee has the right to terminate this contract at any time in which case all previous wishes shall be revoked and returned to the state prior to the inception of the contract. Changes to the time stream shall be returned as closely as possible to the condition as if the wishes had not been made as determined by the Grantor. (who has phenomenal cosmic power and the wisdom to wield this power) These changes are not subject to appeal as rights and privileges as originally granted will have been rendered as null and void.

@majorrich obviously, you’re a lawyer. Leave it to a lawyer to make the simplest thing in the world complicated enough to give God a pounding headache. =)

Come on people! We’re genie(u)s, we can be more mischievous and trickery than that!

#1 -> Sure you can find true love with anyone in the world, but I get to pick who it is (what can I say, it gets lonely in that bottle after the first couple of millennia).
#2 -> I will try to interpret you’re wish in a way that favors me personally (I’ll want to make damn sure you take over my place in the bottle, so I can be free).
#3 -> Your wish may cause no harm to cute animals (I may be a genie, but I’m not an evil bastard).

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@majorrich I never even got that far, I read the first sentence and gave up.

1. You can wish for money, but I choose the denomination.
2. You can wish to kill or hurt someone, but be advised, I’m taking away your ability to orgasm in return.
3. You can wish for as many extra wishes as you want, but be advised, I am allowed to screw with you in ways that only get worse as you make more wishes.

Ghost_in_the_system's avatar

No infinite wishes, No harm to others, And the wish has to be phrased carefully, you will get what you ask for, literally, complete with any possible negative aspects

MayBear's avatar

1. Can’t wish for more wishes.
2. Can’t wish for control over another persons free will.
3. Can’t place harm anyone else

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Sweet holy moly, my rules for wishes would be:
1> If you wish for more or unlimited wishes each wish after that will gain you 5 instances of bad luck (pretty soon it could compound to the point your wishes would be useless if you kept it up)
2> No wish could be a wish of death or harm on another person, directly or indirectly.
3> If the wish is not for you peronally (directed at somone else) it has to be for their benefit such as them getting a promotion, new car etc, if not each instance of violation will gain you 18 months of chronic pain and sleepless night.

Afos22's avatar

1. You can’t Wish for more wishes
2. You can’t wish for more genies
3. Each of your wishes has to be beneficial to at least one other person
