Ceramic Knives Love 'em or Hate 'em?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) November 22nd, 2009

Taking care of Christmas shopping I purchased some Ceramic knives. I also got a set for myself. Do they really hold an edge as well as they say? I also noticed there were ceramic coated cooking pans. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I will say nothing cuts me better than a piece of ceramic. I’ve used them and they were fine and cut well. I just like the feel of steel for some reason.

I just love my Santokus from Shun. I can’t get used to ceramic.

They cut well but steel is more robust for everyday use. Anything with a bone in it (or even a stone in a fruit) can damage the ceramic edge.

I was wondering about the durability of a material that hard. the same happens when carbon steel gets too hard.

Ceramics are nice. Love’em or hate’em? Indifferent.

Ceramics are the “also ran” of the cutlery world.

I heard they are the sharpest thing there is, but they also break easily.

And very good for cutting lettuce.

God invented steel for cutting and ceramic for dishes. I can deal with that.
