Are you only able to get iphone applications from itunes or are there other places to get them?

Asked by Fernspider (3597points) November 24th, 2009

I just bought an iphone * yay me! * and I’m pretty excited. I have read through some of the recommendations for applications but not sure where to get them.

Are you only able to download them from the itunes store or can you get them from anywhere? My other query is, where are the free ones?

Hey, I think itunes is the only place to get them unless you jailbreak your iphone, which will allow you to install full apps without paying for them. Also, if you are after free apps, go to the app store and go for the top free apps. But there are tonnes and tonnes of great apps such as Ping, Skype, Fluther…HEAPS!

Anything else just let me know.

Note- I’m not encouraging jailbreaking the iphone

I really don’t want to jailbreak my phone… voids the warrenty and apparently mucks with the program.

Thanks for the info though. I just found the free application section on itunes :D Whoop whoop. Downloading a cool pet dog game at the moment & Facebook.

The direct link to the iTunes store is the blue icon with the large A on it.

Once you are there, you will see different sections along the bottom of the page.

After you click on one of them, the page to which it takes you has choices along the top. One of those says free.

That’s just scraping the surface.

There is a great free application called “Pandorabox” which has daily lists of all new and temporarily reduced price apps. And of course one of the options is for free apps.

I haven’t paid for an app yet. I have found plenty which were temporarily reduced to free and bow cost money. Developers have all sorts of reasons for reducing prices and this app keeps track of all of them.

Some are only available free for a few hours, others for a few days or months.

Many are available during holiday sales and go back to regular price after.

Christmas is coming. Enjoy the free app. sales.

There are also many app review sites. Just Google that term.

Also other sites and magazines compile “Best Of” or Top Ten lists either monthly or yearly.

These are helpful in highlighting the ones which are worth downloading and trying.

With all the thousands of apps out there, it helps to consult these to bring the best ones to your attention.

If you find an app that makes the iPhone less terrible as a phone… Let me know. I love the iPhone, but I’m finding I would have been better off just buying an iPod touch. My girlfriend is on her third iPhone, and each time it was replaced for free cause there was something wrong by manufacturer. I get dropped calls several times daily, and mms rarely works. The apple store has reformatted my computer and phone and I’ve started from scratch 3 times now as well as complained to AT&T about the problem. Amazing PDA…. Lousy phone. I have read that the phone is being returned by the truckload cause it’s just not meeting standards for consumers.

Seriously tho, pandora radio, shotgun, sheep launcher, fandango, fluther, facebook, myspace, and many more are free. Every iPhone needs the bump app as well as yelp. Airmouse pro is probably the best app I’ve ever purchased.. It was 2.99 and allows you to control your computer like a tv remote. Check it out!

BTW.

I second most of Landon’s recos. and especially Pandora Radio. I use it practically every day. It is the best free streaming app of there. It never craps out like some others do and it syncs with your computer if you have it on there as well.

But in order to avoid any possible confusion I thought I should clarify a coincidence.

I don’t know why there similarity, but there are TWO different apps, both free, with the word pandora in them.

One is just plain Pandora. That is Pandora Radio and streams music.

The next one is the one I first mentioned called Pandora Box. This has nothing at all to do with the other one. Pandorabox is the one which lists reduced price apps.

Two apps, two different purposes, two different companies.

They just happen to have a similar name. Many people assume I’m referencing the radio one since it is very popular. The other one is the one for apps lists.

Wow, thats great! Thank you everyone. Hopefully I wont have too many issues with my phone… although I have always found apple to be great when I need them to repair something.
