What are the procedures I need to go through to obtain a British passport?

Asked by kyraugh (201points) November 27th, 2009

I’m a Canadian citizen but my father was born in England. What are the proceedures I need to go through to obtain a British passport? I hear that it costs tonnes of money and it’s really a pain in the a** to go through.
Has anyone done this before? I’ve tried looking it up online but find that I go in circles and there are never any answers as to how I go about getting it. I don’t even know where to begin! Please help!

What for? You can travel with your Canadian as if it were European or British – perhaps even better – as Canada isn’t at war with anyone. Waste of time, unless you feel strongly about the Royals, imho.

Dam foreigners coming over here, stealing our jobs.

Doesn’t this site help?

@sebastian_von_tulu LOL. Canadian are Brits, lite.

Well, a good reason for wanting to hold a British passport would be for work within the EU.

@kyraugh In a similar situation to yours, we applied for British passports for our sons after 9/11. My husband is English and I’m American and the boys were raised in America. It was not a terrible hassle or expense. My suggestion is to contact the British Consulate in your area and speak to them. They should be able to provide you with the information you need about documentation and costs. My sons have found it useful to have when travelling/studying in Europe.
