Non traditional wedding registry?

Asked by colladom (125points) November 27th, 2009

My fiance and I have been in a long distance relationship (transcontinental) for 3 years now and plan on getting married here in the United States but want to move to his home country of Norway shortly after. We don’t want to set up a wedding registry at a store because then we will have to ship our new stuff overseas which can get very expensive. We would love to find a way for our loved ones to give us gifts for our future home overseas but can’t find a solution.

They have stores in Norway. Some have internet sites where people can buy things and have them shipped to a location in Norway if there’s someone there who can receive and store the gifts. Many sites can be translated into English or offer an English option. Its not impossible, but it takes a little looking. What stores can his family recommend? In addition, stores like Crate and Barrel have international shipping that you can check out. There are several ways of going about it, you just have to figure out some logistics like where the gifts can be delivered.

I buy gifts for Mexican relatives through the website of the stores they are registered at in their country.

Money would be easiest. Do you both come from families that give money at weddings?

I have a family member by marriage who never registered, and she was moving out of the country right after the wedding. They received almost nothing, because the family typically did not give money and they all were told she was moving. I was shocked, this would never happen in my family, but I guess it can happen.

You could set up a registry on Amazon and Crate and Barrel, as well as at Norwegian stores. Crate and Barrel ships everywhere.

Does amazon.com ship to Norway? You can buy variety of things on amazon.

I believe they do. You probably should not register for appliances.

Thank you for all the suggestions, they’ve been helpful. I didn’t realize that Crate and Barrel did international shipping :) We thought about money but know that could be a very bad idea with people being offended/not giving us anything. I think i’ll start searching for other websites that ship internationally as well.

@colladom I don’t think people would be offended at all if you explain in your wedding invitation why you are requesting money. Or you could just get the word out informally through friends and family. This varies by culture of course, but you do have a compelling reason for requesting money.

@jnabb; I think that would be tacky. I would say, “Since we will be living overseas, we are registered at xyz who has agreed to provide international shipping.

@Judi I guess putting it in the invitation could be although I think there might be a way to word it inoffensively. (Maybe just be indicating that you will be setting up household in a foreign country.) International shipping can add a lot to the price of a gift. When my son and daughter-in-law got married, they were in grad school and not setting up a household. They did not register anywhere and we informally told people who asked, that money would be acceptable. Many other people bought them gifts as well and they were happy to see what people had chosen for them. It may well be a cultural thing because in Jewish custom, giving money is pretty standard for weddings, although people do often register as well. I find wedding registries slightly annoying although I understand the usefulness of them.
