How do I get the best use out of a humidifier?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) December 1st, 2009

My room is so dry, so I finally bought a humidifier. I left it running all night and I did wake up with less of a sore throat then usual, but there’s still room for improvement. I left it on my bedside table, is that too high?

No, it’s not. Do you have it on the highest setting? Also, did you buy the right size of a humidifier for the room it is being used in? If so, it might just take a few days of use for your throat to acclimate itself to the throat friendly rise in humidity.

@sliceswiththings: you said ‘My room is so dry’.

The selection of a dry room is the greatest single step toward a humidifier’s best use.

Did you buy a hot air or cold air humidifier?

I asked a question about this earlier and did some research and found the hot air humidifiers work better. After buying my own it certainly does work!

We put ours on the ground. It is warm air (which is best for sore throat type of things) and we bought one where you can add vicks vapor rub and we put that in when we first turn it on. Our symptoms have increased dramatically.

@MrBr00ks has some good ideas as well
