Does anyone know the number of male doctors versus female doctors?

Asked by Frankie (4032points) December 1st, 2009

I’m writing a research paper and I’d like to mention the number (percentage) of male vs. female doctors in the U.S., both as a whole and also within the field of obstetrics. I’ve tried doing google searches but can’t seem to find anything relevant. So if anyone knows offhand or is able to find something, that would be very helpful! I’d prefer something reliable, like a .gov, .org, or a scholarly writing, not something off wikipedia or anything, and obviously I’d need to cite it as well, so please include your source if you can find anything. Thanks!!

I do know the percentage of GP’s is increasingly female, while the percentage of high-paying specialists is primarily male. Try using a research search engine (even google scholar would do for this question) to get current, reliable numbers. The topic was heavily researched a couple of years ago.

This blog has some useful references (though they may be a bit outdated). You might consider looking at the references and then checking through a citation index to see who has cited them. My personal experience in medicine is that the ratio in North America for the Generation X and below is 50–50 male-female.

This might help you. It’s a link to a PDF from the CDC, who took a survey of doctors from 2000–2007.

Go to the table of contents, and click on page 393 for demographics.

Sec 108 is by gender
Sec 111 is by specialty
