What is the best way to stop world hunger?

Asked by skadu (199points) December 1st, 2009

It seems like this time of year I get so many solicitations to contribute money to relief organizations worldwide. Which do you recommend and why?

If there was a way to end world hunger, I’m sure it would’ve been done by now. Here’s an idea. Let’s take all the left over food that we don’t eat from our everyday meals, pack it up, and ship it across the world to the starving children? I bet that would end world hunger. I tend to never finish what’s on my plate.

Stop the problem at the source.
You can’t be hungry if you’re dead.

I recommend a family at a time. I have had a foster child thru Foster Parents since 1981. I watched my fat chuckling baby and thought I should share. The point of this group is to ‘teach a man to fish’.

@Sarcasm yeah, I think that’s the problem. I read that like 16,000 children die daily from hunger related causes – 1 every 5 seconds. I’m like @ItalianPrincess1217, I don’t finish what is on my plate and people are starving. Seems like something we could do and I guess 1 person at a time is probably all I can do.

If your only concern is world hunger, and not making yourself feel good, send the money to a country with low corruption rates. Even reputable aid agencies can lose the vast amount of their funds one it gets to a high corruption country. And if you want you money to go the furthest, you will want to send it out of the country. Looking at the Corruption Perception Index Barbados, Qatar, Chile, and Uruguay are good choices. Here is one hunger charity in Uruguay http://www.ninosconalas.org.

Avoid charities that use large amounts of foreign workers, as these can be a large drain on funds.

Easy. Just blow up the world.

have food in your car. Whenever you see a homeless person give them a can of food.

@cyndihugs, you’d be surprised, as was I, how often they will reject it in the US. I’d imagine them to laugh at you in Western Europe.

cyn's avatar

@arpinum honestly, i wouldn’t mind, because at least i have food and willing to share it with others and they have no shelter, food, etc. If they want to die of hunger- it was their choice.

I am more likely to contribute to agencies that provide free birth control than food.

One in four children in the US don’t have enough to eat.

Stop the starving adults from having children

If you had one dog that became twenty dogs that you couldn’t afford to feed, you would sterilize it to resolve the problem. Sterilization is the best solution. Many of these people are aids ridden and have HIV children. They should be all screened and those with aids get immediately sterilised. Also, those wanting children need to prove they can support and sustain them, otherwise they also get sterilised. It’s all about sustainability. If you can’t feed yourself then don’t have children.

Interesting point @beautifulbobby193. I would personally not compare people without adequate food supply to dogs. I think you have a lot of misinformation and are overgeneralizing. There is no reason to sterilize people based on HIV status. These days vertical HIV transmission from mother to infant is preventable.

Perhaps I’m wrong, but your comments come across as antagonistic and disvaluing of certain human life. The issues are much more complex than you present.

Education and access to birth control are part of the answer. Equitable distribution of wealth and resources is another. Sustainable local harvest is another. In response to the question asked, I would look for reputable organizations who focus on these points.

Cupcake, we all have different views and are entitled to such. There is only so much charitable organisations can do and although they help individuals I do not believe that the overall problem has greatly improved. Mass sterilization of those whom are unable to sustain a healthy life for their young would be an effective, albeit unethical solution. One could argue that there is cruelty in allowing the starving to reproduce and bring new life into a world that is unable to sustain them.

What’s the process to prevent this? Is it something that, oh, you know, people in the slums and rural areas of Africa can afford to get?

I know it sounds awfully heartless, but I side with @beautifulbobby193.
I don’t understand how it even sounds like a remotely intelligent idea to have kids if you can’t feed yourself.

This is not an issue of overpopulation. Sorry folks. I really wish people would educate themselves on this topic. A great book about another topic has a fantastic chapter on the subject. It’s called “Conquest” and is by Andrea Smith.
Here is a quick info on this: http://www.psrast.org/nowohu.htm
The issues that lead to hunger have more to do with corruption, consumerism, misuse of power, and poverty as someone else mentioned and other factors.
If you want to donate to a global charity then I recommend doing some serious research to make sure your money is going to help feed others.
Donating locally is a great idea, if you have a local food bank then you can see directly how your donations affect others.

@YARNLADY I’m sure there are quite a few people who disagree. I insist that they are miseducated. In fact it seems that not everyone for World Watch Institute agrees on the issue as can be seen in the article below.
http://www.worldwatch.org/node/5771

Having less people in the world will simply not solve the problem that 1% of the world’s population controls resources for the other 99%. It would be true if we had 100 people or a Bazillion people.

YARNLADY's avatar

@RedPowerLady Part of what you say is true, as long as there is a distribution disparity, we have a problem. However, when the available supply simply is not enought to cover the current population no amount of fairness will help.

In a society of 100, if the one person in charge is wise, there can still be equitable distribution of enough resources. In the world population, the earth cannot supply enough resources (food and potable water) to feed the current 6.5 billion people. If the entire population of the earth were to have a competent, equitable production and distribution of food, each and every man, woman and child would have the equivalent of one bowl of rice a day.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@YARNLADY I see your point. But as the link posted above suggests when commodities are scarce we actually produce more. So when we get in a crunch we find more ways to produce. Right now, for example, we have enough commodities it just a certain group of people (namely us) who are using the majority of them.

This article, very well written, explains that there is enough food in the world to adequately feed anyone (or at least the possibility to create enough food):
http://www.un.org/Pubs/chronicle/2001/issue3/0103p44.html

Here are some facts, pretty basic, by the World Hunger Education Service on the leading causes of hunger:
http://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm

And here the top myth is that there is not enough food to go around:
http://www.foodfirst.org/12myths
(note that myth 3 is overpopulation as a cause)
