What is your favorite Christmas movie or television show?

Asked by filmfann (52225points) December 3rd, 2009

What puts you in the mood for the season? A Charlie Brown Christmas? A Christmas Carol? Seeing a young boy with his tongue stuck to a frozen pole?
What are you tired of seeing? Which do you miss?

It’s a Wonderful Life is too common, so I’m going with White Christmas with Bing Crosby.

troubleinharlem's avatar

I’m actually tired of seeing “It’s A Wonderful Life”. It got really old for me, really fast. I don’t have to see a movie to get in the spirit, but my favorite would have to be “A Muppets Christmas Carol”.

A Christmas Story

“You-you want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down for you”...
It’s A Wonderful Life

Ugh saw “A Christmas Story” like four times in three days as a kid and it made me really uncomfortable. I hope to never see it again.

The original “Miracle on 34th Street” with a young Natalie Wood on tv on Christmas Eve night. I watch it with my dad, always very cozy.

gemiwing's avatar

Emmet Otter all the way. “No hole in the washtub” is one of my favorite sayings.

oratio's avatar

I don’t know. Every year in Sweden, they show the movie “Ivanhoe”. I don’t know why. I don’t think anyone does. It hasn’t got anything to do with Christmas.

Snarp's avatar

I’ve never actually seen “A Christmas Story”. And I hate “Miracle on 34th Street”, new or old. We do watch the Rankin and Bass shows every year. But they’re not my favorite. Still prefer “White Christmas” and “Wonderful Life”.

ModernEpicurian's avatar

Me and my Dad, every year without fail on Christmas Eve watch Home Alone and The Garfield Christmas Special.

Would be christmas without them!

Another vote for While Christmas. “Sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters . . .”

I also like the original movie that contained Irving Berlin’s famous song, Holiday Inn.

BraveWarrior's avatar

#1 A Charlie Brown Christmas
#2 A Christmas Story
# 3 March of the Wooden Soldiers (aka Babes in Toyland) although really the end only, as Tom-Tom is sooooooooo annoying I want to give him a dope slap & a mega wedgie!!!

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer

The first scene on Misfit Island made my cry every time as a girl, and I loved the song Clarice the doe sang:

There’s always tomorrow,
For dreams to come true,
Believe in your dreams
Come what may.

There’s always tomorrow,
With so much to do,
And so little time in a day.

We all pretend
The rainbow has an end
And you’ll be there, my friend, someday.

There’s always tomorrow,
For dreams to come true,
Tomorrow is not far away.

A Christmas Carol, has to be the 1938 original version.

flameboi's avatar

The very first Simpsons episode :D

J0E's avatar

Jack Frost, not the stupid live action version, the Rankin/Bass stop motion version.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

The best Christmas movie is A Christmas Story
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a close second.

The best Christmas TV program is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

OpryLeigh's avatar

I agree with @MrItty Muppets Christmas Carol is the best!

limeaide's avatar

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
The Polar Express
Rankin and Bass shows

Call me old fashion but does anything top the 1951 “Christmas Carol”. We use to watch it every Christmas eve late night on PBS. room lit just by Christmas lights, snaking on cheese and grapes, & Christmas cookies How many times has this story being done (before and after) and still when you say the name Scrooge And it’s Alistair Sims’ face everybody sees. With his performance (I still smile ear to ear when awakes the next morning despite everyone and their mother knows whats going to happen frame by frame!!) and how picturesque and atmospheric l they capture Victorian England, it’s perfect.

In the opposite direction Mystery Science 3000 episode of Russo-Finnish movie “Jack Frost” Should be a Christmas stable ” (humming) don’t come around here no more” ”Once again we learn slightly unattractive people are inherently evil” lol
And of course “The Grinch who stole Christmas” the original

MacBean's avatar

Charlie Brown. And A Christmas Story. I always have the TV on for the whole 24-hour marathon of that.

MrItty's avatar

I also have to watch the claymation (or stop-motion?) trilogy of movies too – Rudolph, Frosty, and Santa Claus. Wouldn’t be Christmas without watching them.

ModernEpicurian's avatar

As if I forgot National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!

drClaw's avatar

I was never very fond of holiday movies and “yes” I realize that I will be chastised by holiday movie purists for what I am about to say. “Elf is my favorite holiday movie” so suck it Christmas Story lovers with your judgmental eyes!

drClaw's avatar

@ModernEpicurian I can’t believe I overlooked that!

OpryLeigh's avatar

@drClaw I don’t like many holida movies either!

erichw1504's avatar

Home Alone 1 & 2 is a tradition to watch in my household every year.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

ccrow's avatar

@THEDELLS I also like the Alastair Sim version, although the one w/George C. Scott is very good too, & is my husband’s favorite.
Christmas Story (the dad reminds me a bit of my own dad :-)), It’s a Wonderful Life, definitely March of the Wooden Soldiers w/Laurel & Hardy… and for non live-action, Rudolph, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, & Charlie Brown Christmas.
I’m sorry, @drClaw but I can’t watch anything w/Will Ferrell… well, except for the cowbell! lol

gemiwing's avatar

@drClaw Elf is my second-favorite. It’s hilarious. Plus it has Bob Newhart- I mean c’mon!

MacBean's avatar

Oh. You know what else? Love Actually. But I watch that quite often through the whole year.

AstroChuck's avatar

It’s hard to beat Ralphie almost shooting his eye out. And you’ve got to love that leg lamp. Another Xmas flick I really like is Holiday Inn.. You’ve just got to skip the very dated and racist “Lincoln’s Birthday” segment. The blackface scene tends to ruin the entire film, so ya gotta jump past that.

SuperMouse's avatar

A Very Brady Christmas. I am being serious, it totally brings me back to my childhood, and when they rescue Mr. Brady from that fallen building I get all choked up. AVBC is tied for first with Scrooged, Bill Murray at his best.

knitfroggy's avatar

A Christmas Story is my all time favorite Christmas movie. When the Bumpass’ dogs eat the turkey and the dad yells Sons’ a bitches! I rewind it over and over. I got a string of tree lights for my birthday a couple weeks ago that have mini leg lamps on them. Someday I plan to own the full size lamp.

I also like to watch It’s a Wonderful Life.

poofandmook's avatar

A Christmas Story, hands down
Rudolph (Rankin Bass… the Burl Ives one from the sixties)
A Charlie Brown Christmas
A Garfield Christmas

MissAnthrope's avatar

Elf, Scrooged, and A Christmas Story.

8 crazy nights. funny movie

sdeutsch's avatar

I love the Muppet Christmas Carol, but I have to say A Muppet Family Christmas is my very favorite (the whole gang – including Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock folks – shows up at Fozzie’s mom’s house for Christmas – what could be better?)

It’s also a tradition in my family to watch The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree every year – we’ve all got the whole thing memorized, so we can sing along with the bears!

Greench Stoled the Christmas . and Unaccompanied Minors .

‘the snowman’ always takes me back

Jude's avatar

@trailsillustrated I love when he uses the pear as a nose, and the music/visuals when the boy and the snowman are flying through the sky. The ending, though…Gah. Such a good movie.

sjmc1989's avatar

The Ref
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
Elf
The Christmas Story
How the Grinch Stole Christmas(The Original of course)
Charlie Brown’s Christmas

Snarp's avatar

@MissAnthrope GA for Scrooged.

poofandmook's avatar

I also forgot the original Grinch!

DominicX's avatar

Christmas Vacation – It’s a tradition to watch this in my family, along with Home Alones 1 & 2 and A Christmas Carol.
A Christmas Carol – George C. Scott version; I know there are approximately 1,834 versions of this movie.
Home Alone and Home Alone 2
Arthur’s Perfect Christmas – Yes, I like Arthur. :)
Rudolph: The Movie – One of my favorite children’s Christmas movies.
Elf
The Santa Clause
Miracle on 34th Street

sakura's avatar

another vote for elf and scrooged :)

beautifulbobby193's avatar

Scrooged (apart from the cringey part at the very end) and National Lampoons Christmas.

DominicX's avatar

I’ve never heard of Scrooged; should I see it?

beautifulbobby193's avatar

Yeah, Scrooged is great. Bill Murray at his best.

tinyfaery's avatar

Love Actually
The Year Without A Santa Clause (it’s so pagan).

AstroChuck's avatar

Christmas Vacation could have made it in my top ten holiday movies if only they could have gone with a director other than John Hughes.

The “Alf” Christmas Special
www.imdb.com/title/tt0504387/
and
“Pinky and the Brain” also had a good Christmas special…
www.imdb.com/title/tt0266854/

filmfann's avatar

My favorite hasn’t been mentioned. I love “A Wish For Wings That Worked”. This is a holiday cartoon with Opus and Bill the Cat. It is sentimental, yet quite twisted.
Another one I love is “Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics” from South Park. Just the SP characters singing holiday tunes in their own little way.
It simply wouldn’t be Christmas without “A Christmas Carol” with Alistar Sim, or “Scrooged” with Bill Murray.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas” is also seasonal gold.
“The Simpson’s ” first episode is great fun, as is the original “Miracle On 34th Street”
My kids loved “The Santa Clause” and “Prancer”, while my wife loves “Frosty the Snowman”
Thanks for sharing, everyone.

irocktheworld's avatar

I might have to say Polar Express or Elf.
Polar Express gets me excited after Christmas whether it’s after it or if Christmas is far away! Elf makes me laugh and it’s a great comedy.I just died laughing.:P

limeaide's avatar

I forgot about Scrooged, great movie!

PretentiousArtist's avatar

CanNOT believe no one has said this yet
The original Black Christmas
It so much better than some repulsive and mind numbingly boring juvenile cartoon movie

rangerr's avatar

@PretentiousArtist “These broads would hump the Leaning Tower of Pisa if they could get up there!” I love that movie.

gemiwing's avatar

Still surprised no one likes/has seen Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas. Seriously, no one? I mean it’s Jim Henson and everything.

sdeutsch's avatar

@gemiwing I love Emmet Otter! It’s just not my very favorite Muppet Christmas special, so I forgot to mention it – but I do love all things Muppet, especially the Christmas specials.

gemiwing's avatar

@sdeutsch Glad I’m not alone in liking it then! I was starting to worry it was being forgotten to time.

Thanks for Scrooged, you guys. Don’t know how I missed that movie. I loved it!

And @filmfann, good on ya for reminding me about A Wish for Wings that Work. I saw that movie when I was really little and forgot all about it! Can’t wait to watch it with this evening.
