Have you or anyone you know ever been on a reality show?

Asked by Likeradar (19583points) December 4th, 2009

I’m being lazy and watching a lot of reality shows today, and just thinking about the editing processes and how some people are portrayed as fairly flat characters- the villain, the nice one, the “bad” girl, etc. I’ve never known anyone who’s been on a reality show, so I don’t know how accurately the people are portrayed.

Do you guys have any first or second hand experience of this?

I know someone who just put in her application for The Biggest Loser. That’s the best I can do.

Would someone even be allowed to answer?

Likeradar's avatar

@erichw1504 Me too. She almost made it too! She got to the last round of auditioning in LA, but didn’t make the final cut.

@RedPowerLady They don’t have to say what show- I’m sure there are non-disclosure things.

I hope not.

chelseababyy's avatar

Yep! My boyfriends brother’s friend was on The Pick Up Artist. Season Two.

My old housemate went for some “Next Top Model Show” but she had to go in jeans and wasn’t able to show off her great legs as she had spent the night before on her knees getting a good seeing to and had carpet burns all over her legs, haha

I’m on a reality show right now. There just aren’t any cameras and the audience is small.

I know someone who was on ‘The Benefactor, the Mark Cuban reality show.

My niece made it to the second round of ‘America’s Next Top Model’.

I am on the reality show ‘The Family Circus’ every day.

ModernEpicurian's avatar

My sister has a friend that was on the ‘Jeremy Kyle Show’.

I’m ashamed that I even know someone that knows someone that was within ten feet of that show.

erichw1504's avatar

Truman Burbank was on one.

Thank God no!!!!

Ah, yes. During the writer’s strike, ABC Family cooked up this delightful little show called America’s Prom Queen. My ex-roommate is the one in the green dress. The girl was a nightmare to live with and she ended up getting second place.

I remember, the night of the finale, I couldn’t watch it but my mom did and she asked me what would be worse than winning. I said being the runner up would be the worst that could happen. I was right!

My boss’s brother has been a sous chef on Iron Chef America a couple of times, but I don’t know if that counts ;-)

RareDenver's avatar

@DominicX how have you handled the fame? lol

erichw1504's avatar

@DominicX Yeah, don’t let the paparazzi get to you!

DominicX's avatar

Well, I think it’s pretty cool. Now I’m recorded on a TV show forever. :) I’ve made my legacy…

OpryLeigh's avatar

@ModernEpicurian I don’t blame you for being a tiny bit uncomfortable about that!

I know someone who auditioned for Big Brother but, as far as I know, that’s it.

A guy I know tried out for American Idol. He was turned down and in the little interview thing afterward, he said Simon could kiss his ass and then proceeded to stand up, turn around, stick his butt in the camera, and slap it a couple of times. This made it on the air.

RareDenver's avatar

@MacBean My wife religiously watches all those shows like American Idol, X Factor et al and I must admit I enjoy watching the early stages where you have a mix of people that are comically bad and surprisingly good, when they get to the later stages I lose interest quickly

MacBean's avatar

@RareDenver: I’m the same way. Sometimes I just can’t look away from the train wreck of the first rounds of American Idol. Especially since it tends to effing preempt my regular shows, so it’s not like I have anything else to be watching at that time.

RareDenver's avatar

@MacBean I’m one of those that loves to hate reality TV but yeah sometimes it sucks me right in like the weak pathetic consumer robot I am

This girl was a student of mine-now she wins multi-thousand dollar pots as a professional poker player…she did well on the Amazing Race and they portrayed her accurately/fairly.

gailcalled's avatar

I had a friend who lasted for one round on Jeopardy!. She used her winnings to buy a new refrigerator; her husband had a plaque (commemorating the event) put on it in her honor.

My neighbor was on Name That Tune. That’s as close as I get.
yeah, I know it’s not that close

How were your friends represented by the editing? Accurately or were they edited into something they’re not?

The first season of MTV’s Sorority Life was filmed in my town and featured sorority girls who went to my school. I obviously didn’t go to school with them. This was filmed in 2002 I believe – I was in the (thinks back) 8th or 9th grade then. My friends and I were hanging around downtown one night and saw the filming crew. We didn’t know what was going on then, but figured it out once the show aired. You know those shots where they’d show places around town and you’d see people passing by? I knew all of those places and some of those people.
My friends’ brothers brother knows a guy who knows Russell from the last season of Big Brother. I don’t consider this knowing someone who was on TV though.
My friend, Chris, went to Washington D.C. for some kind of internship or whatever and was on CSPAN.

I haven’t been on a reality show… yet. One day you’ll see @johnpowell and I as a team on The Amazing Race.

Yes. I grew up with a woman who became a police detective in Cincinnati. This past year she won the MESSIEST HOUSE IN AMERICA on the Style Network.

Embarassed as I am, she is a slob, and some of the shit they cleaned out of her house dated back to when we had a baby shower for her daughter who is 20. She is disgusting!

I know someone who’s dying to be on Survivor. I think she’d do well since she deals with a jungle of kindergarteners every day!

smartfart11's avatar

I know this lady who was on Hell’s Kitchen. Okay, well I didn’t actually know her, but I knew of her. Not sure if that counts.

Christian from Project Runway is the brother of one of my best high school friends, Shannon. I watched him grow up…he is younger than I am. He has always been such a nice and intelligent guy!

KatawaGrey's avatar

@jenandcolin: Oh my god! That is so cool! I gotta know, how many haircuts does he get in a month?

jenandcolin's avatar

I am not sure now. When he was growing up I guess he had the same as most people. He was always very creative but his look has changed a lot. I haven’t seen him in a few years.

autumn43's avatar

@jenandcolin – Christian was one of the most interesting designers – personality and clothing-wise – to be on that show, IMHO.

ShoulderPadQueen's avatar

i have not nor anyone i directly know. i worked with a woman that knew a guy from her hometown that was on Survivor.

KatawaGrey's avatar

@ShoulderPadQueen: Oh my god! That is so cool! What’s his name? I have seen every single episode of Survivor. :)

ShoulderPadQueen's avatar

@KatawaGrey i dont remeber his name or what season but he was from Troy, Al.

KatawaGrey's avatar

@ShoulderPadQueen: Oh my god! I think that’s Bobby Jon! That is so very cool!

My mom and I love Bobby Jon.

ShoulderPadQueen's avatar
