Should I be upset that my boss is accepting resumes? And would you confront your boss about it?

Asked by crazyandbeautiful (551points) December 4th, 2009

I am the receptionist and transfer all calls. Today I got a call stating that someone sent their resume over and wanted to know if it was received. I put the person on hold to find (the person who the call was for). I was a little taken back by this. Do I confront my boss about this? Or just leave it alone like nothing happened?

Do you know that it was for your position? Could it be for the hours you are not there?

I would probably tell my boss I had heard they were hiring and ask what positions were opening up. My goal would be to sound interested or curious without seeming worried or confrontational.

People send their resume out all over the place, looking for jobs. They’re basically fishing and looking for a bite. They’re hoping that either people have openings or if they do have openings that occur in the next little while that they’re keeping resumes on file. Nothing did happen. There’s nothing to confront anyone about.

Was that the only resume that’s been sent in? If there was really a position available, there would be thousands of resumes coming in, with the economy being the way it is. If it’s the only one, then I agree with @avvooooooo, that it just someone sending out resumes, hoping for someone to say they have a job for them.

@supacase no i dont know if i was for my position but…it very well could be. i get the feeling they feel i am not doing a good job. i have never worked for this kind of doctor (pain management). from day one it has been no picnic.

I think you’re jumping the gun here. You have no proof at this point that they’re actually trying to replace you or fill your position. Unless there has been more than one call and/or you see an ad in job finder about an open receptionist position then it’s safe to assume that you’re not being replaced.

@lfino i do not know. the office hours are 10–4. i work from 12–4. so they could be doing this when i am not there. it just took me off guard was all. i am looking for new employment. but really i cannot see anyone staying as long as i did. they are rough crowd to please.

The simplest way would be to look into thought he employment listing or to get someone you know to call what or whomever is considered human resources and have them ask if there are any positions open.

@crazyandbeautiful Ha! Right on! I also work for a pain specialist, and those patients are craaaazy! Poor bastards. And the docs in pain
management are nutso too. Hang in there. My advice is to make yourself indespensable in some way – make sure you are the only person who knows Dr. Whatsisbutt’s schedule, or auth procedures, or imaging spreadsheet, or whatnot. And don’t let them give you shit. Half your job is to shield the practitioner from the crazy. You are needed. Live it.

Who handles the office for the first two hours of the day? I guess you could always just ask your boss point blank if another job was opening up and just see what he or she says. But don’t ask in a confronting way, just like you’re curious to know.

the office manager does my job for the first 2 hours. then i take over. they are very close in there and god forbid ya do not do it right. your damned if ya do and damned if ya dont

I don’t really have much to say about the subject, but to the people that are mentioning unpleasant working environments, I suggest you watch what you say. Fluther is getting quite popular and my former employer somehow, (I think maybe they googled some key phrases that I might have said) found a question I asked about their work ethics and I was relieved because of it. So, be careful how you go about this.

oh and welcome to fluther @crazyandbeautiful

@Axemusica, good call on that one.

@crazyandbeautiful You mentioned that you were in the process of searching for another job? Then what right do you have to be upset if your boss is seaching for a replacement? Double standard?

Just wanting to add that no matter what the situation is it is never a good idea to “confront” your boss. You stand a good chance of being let go and even if you were to leave on your own you will need his reference for future employment.

The U6 is over 17 percent. I’m shocked you have only seen one resume.

It is possible that someone has called that was interested in your resume and your boss knows that you are looking for other jobs so the are lining up a replacement for when/if you give notice.

They send them, the boss has to get them.
Do not take it personal. It is just part of business. And the EEOC.

Whoa. You’re working part-time, you can’t stand your job, are looking for something else, and are ticked off because people in a 8–11% unemployment economy are sending resumes?

It sounds like this is a difficult work environment to begin with, confronting your boss about something you are not even certain is happening can only make things worse. You run the risk of coming off as paranoid – not really an image you want to portray. If you have to know what is going on, search some of the job sites and local employment ads.

It’s never a bad thing to accept resumes. It doesn’t mean anything and shouldn’t threaten you. Your boss may be just as frightened of you leaving as you are of him/her getting rid of you. He needs to have options, too.

If you feel that you’re not doing as good of a job as is expected of you, just do your very best to try to make your value known. Step it up, if you want to keep your job. Try to master something new every day. Ask many questions. Perhaps your boss will see your effort and interest and take it into account.

In my department, there are about 8 other people that do the same job as I do (just not as well, heh). If my boss were accepting resumés, I would mostly assume that one of my co-workers was leaving, or perhaps the department was expanding and another person needed to be hired. This has happened several times during my tenure there.

If you don’t know for sure that it’s your position they’re hiring for, if they’re really hiring at all, you may be over-reacting. Is anyone else in your workplace leaving? Are they expanding the staff?

Either way, I would continue to do the best job I possibly could. That way, they are more likely to think well of you. And if they do replace you, it would be for some reason that you couldn’t help – which might pave the way to unemployment checks for a while at least, rather than nothing at all.

@crazyandbeautiful Should you “confront” your boss? “i get the feeling they feel i am not doing a good job.” “from day one it has been no picnic.” “god forbid ya do not do it right. your damned if ya do and damned if ya dont” “i am looking for new employment. but really i cannot see anyone staying as long as i did. they are rough crowd to please.”

I’m just taking a shot in the dark here but maybe you’re giving off a negative vibe.

crazyandbeautiful's avatar

well it is confirmed i heard they are looking to replace me. how do i know? many people called regarding “the job”. and the only job available is my position. so they are gonna interview asap get this person in, and fire me soon. i am not upset however but…will need to look in a different field. medical field is not for me. 10 yrs too long.

avvooooooo's avatar

@crazyandbeautiful Are you SURE that yours is the only position available? Is it possible that you’re mistaken? They’re calling about “the job,” not specifically “the job that C&B is doing?” Its something to think about.
