Which classic rock star has aged the most gracefully?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) December 5th, 2009

I was just watching some youtube video of Eric Clapton; for my money he has aged the best of all the best known classic rock stars. Clapton dresses in nicely tailored suits with a good haircut and nice glasses. Which classic rock stars do you think have aged well; which ones haven’t been quite as successful?

considering how old Tom Petty is, he’s not looking too bad… though I’m well aware that a lot of people would disagree with me.

Paul McCartney looks great for his age too.

Not exactly classic, but let me tell you… I would not kick James Hetfield out of my bed for eating crackers!

Hands down, Paul McCartney. He is still sexy at 60 something.

Likeradar's avatar

David Bowie is still super attractive.

@poofandmook Ditto on the Hetfield!
I used to live in the same town as him. One night at dinner with my parents, my eyes were glued to this really good looking older (to me) dude. I could not take my eyes off him. As he and his family got up to leave I realized it was James Hetfield. The man is hot.

I noticed the OP mentioned Keith Richards in the topics.

I’m afraid he doesn’t qualify as he’s looked thay way almost forever…

1. Lemmie from Halkwind and Motorhead. His mole/beauty mark is bigger than ever and so is his mustache.

2. Sting (not really classic rock)
3. Roger Daltry

Elvis Costello is looking as cool as ever.

Rod Stewart is pretty good except for his hairdo, but that is his trademark!

The Boss is still looking good too.

Jackson Browne

Rick Springfield still looks good, although I’m not sure he is a rock “star”.

@poofandmook: Was that you behind me at Madison Square Garden last month, screaming, “JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMES!”?

@hearkat: Sunday the 15th? I was there… LOL

Another vote for Tom Petty. I heard an interview with him a while back, and the interviewer asked him (I’m paraphrasing here), “Tom ,how do you feel, being so old and surrounded with much younger talent?” He answered something like, “Dude, I’m glad to be alive and working! So many from my generation died so early.”

@poofandmook: I was there Saturday night. Sorry to have missed you! The woman behind me was easily over 30, and we were quite far from the stage. Even before they came onstage, she was screaming for him like a 13-year-old at a Jonas Brothers show. I assured her that he couldn’t hear her, and she agreed, but continued through the show.… :-/

Keith Richards, hands down.

John (Cougar) Mellencamp

@AstroChuck Hasn’t Keith Richards been dead for 20 years? Or has he just looked like he was?

Bob Seger looks respectable.

casheroo's avatar

@Likeradar My first thought was Bowie!

mick Jagger!

Tina Turner!

Elvis Presley.

mick jagger. i mean, yeah, he looks older, but his energy and stamina and creativity hold his age where “music and time” both changes and revolves right back to where he was mick jagger of prime time.

I have to agree with @peedub, Elvis Costello has definitely held up quite well. Have you seen Madonna lately, she’s in better shape than she was in her 20s. And then there’s Prince, I didn’t have that guy’s energy when I was 16.

chicadelplaya's avatar

Bruce Springsteen!! He’s hot! :)

snowyowl_ecs's avatar

Joan Jett… if you can classify her as “classic rock”.
Oh, and Bowie. He’ll always look crazy awesome.

charliebrown's avatar

david gilmour looks kinda nice. mick fleetwood looks nice too except for his shiny bald head. and stevie nicks definately.

Sueanne_Tremendous's avatar

@snowyowl_ecs : You took the words right out of my mouth….Joan Jett still looks great and still gives me shivers.

From a fit/hot perspective: I’m with @chicadelplaya and @peedub…...Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Roger Daltry!

From a preservation/will outlive us all perspective: Keith Richards (the man is more alcohol than water and recovered from a roll out of a coconut tree at age 60+!!!)

Not Johnny Winter! I saw a picture of him in today’s Washington Post and he looks like a human scarecrow. Of course, he is an ex? heroin addict. It’s a wonder he’s alive!

aprilsimnel's avatar

Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. Did you see him on the Python documentary that was on after Halloween on the IFC channel in the US? He looks farking fantastic.

SuperMouse's avatar

@Marina, I think one of the secrets to aging as a rock star is cutting the hair. Judging from the pictures that came up in a google image search, I don’t think Johnny Winter got that memo. Bowie, Springsteen, Daltry, Clapton, have all cut their hair, they seem to realize that a 60 year-old man cannot rock the ponytail as well as man in his 20’s.

chyna's avatar

@Marina Johnny’s brother Edgar isn’t much better.

marinelife's avatar

@SuperMouse I think you are on to something there!

@chyna I always liked Edgar better though for some reason.

Stretching ‘classic rock”, Darryl Hall & John Oates have both aged well, as has Kenny Loggins. And Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode still looks great, but, of course he looked like all of nine years old when the band started back in 1980 (he was actually 18).
See ya…...Gary/wtf

@whatthefluther That’s my favorite music guy. You are a rock god and no thread on the subject would be complete without you!

Paul McCartney

I don’t know if he is considered a classic yet, but Jon Bon Jovi is a class act and he still looks good enough to eat.
