Could you recommend a good indoor plant that I could put in my bedroom? I'm thinking more like a small tree.

Asked by richardhenry (12692points) December 7th, 2009

My friend recommended a Ficus, which is pretty nice actually. It wouldn’t be in direct sunlight, but it would get a reasonable amount of daylight. I’d be putting it in the corner of the room.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I love miniature tree ferns.

A miniature lemon tree – they’re great for keeping the colds away and lemons are yum!

I’m looking for something reasonably tall. Human sized.

Lemon trees only do well in climates that replicate LA, southern Italy, the Greek Islands, Israel and the fertile crescent.

Here are some more ideas, including the schlefflera (first on left in second row).

@gailcalled huh, you definitely more than i do about them then

I believe I have a Dracaena marginata in my room, from looking at Gail’s site (totally awesome!) and I can attest to the fact that it is impossible to kill. Sometimes I forget to water it for a month, it still looks sprightly as ever. Sounds like that’s pretty typical for a cane plant. I do get occasional comments that it looks like the kind of plant one finds in a doctor’s office though… :( Shh, little plant! Don’t listen to them!

Braided ficus trees look really cool.

There’s a new (to me at least) tree commercially available called a canela. It is purported to thrive in either bright or low light, is an attractive evergreen, and mine is about 6 feet high. It has the added cachet of being in the cinnamon family (I haven’t noticed a smell associated with mine). It looks a bit like a young citrus tree.

I have a money tree and I love it. Very low maintenance!

@syz I looked at the link and I think I might get one of those :)

What sort of light is in your bedroom? Which direction do the windows face? Do they get shaded by surrounding trees or buildings? I have found that plants thrive best in the right level of light for them.

A good all-around houseplant is the rubber plant. You can get them as big or small as you need, they are easy to care for, and beautiful. You can watch them grow day by day if they have the right conditions. I find them quite personable.

Marijuana plants are great.

If you want something really low maintenance, how ‘bout a fake tree? My mom has two that look like Ficus (Fici? Ficuses?) trees. They are about 6–7 feet tall and only require the occasional dusting. (They also look great with some white Christmas lights wrapped around them!)

Real trees or green plants are wonderful for your health; they emit good things that remove toxins from your air. http://www.improvemyhome.com.au/how-to-guides/living/reduce-emissions-with-indoor-plants

Yeah, I second @gailcalled – I definitely feel better than when I lived in a dorm room totally devoid of plant life. I have plants in every room of the house now, except for the bathroom. A few less than I did a few weeks ago sadly, since I just noticed that I killed all three of my basil plants… I’m a bad plant mommy.

Lots of types of ferns or palms are easy to grow and require surprisingly small amounts of light. I’ve had a few different ferns for years, and they’ve done wonderfully in several dark apartments. Also, they grow like crazy. Mine was taller than I was before I moved and gave it to my neighbor.

Here is more accurate info about the health benefits of house plants.

@juniper ‘s suggestion of ferns is right up there.

@richardhenry:Last spring I bought a couple of biggish banana trees. My landscaper nephew in Baja told me they’d do okay in a cold house when winter came. They’re so much fun. They each have about six leaves at a time, which unfurl from a tight vertical spiral and soon hang down over the sofa. When each leaf gets done, it starts to turn brown; I cut them away from the trunk with scissors. I bought them when were about 5 or 6 feet tall and cost $30—$35.

“Climates that replicate LA, southern Italy, the Greek Islands, Israel”

My bedroom fits the bill. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll check through all of these today. I’ll let you know which one I go for!

@richardhenry: Ooh, lavender, thyme, an olive tree, a small cyprus…lucky you. We grow banana trees here (zone 4B). They are fun and can push the roof off your house but yes, we have no bananas. They never bear fruit this far North.

@richardhenry: it’s true, we have no bananas.

gail’s recipe for your Med climate sounds like an aromatic lifestyle. Hope you go for it.

If it’s going to be in your bedroom, in a corner away from direct sunlight, I would recommend a Ficus lyrata, or the fiddle-leaf fig plant. It has big, bold, glossy leaves, and it doesn’t need much sunlight to thrive. It’s also relatively inexpensive as a tree-sized plant, and handsome looking like most ficus plants. Another fig plant that looks good and is hardy is the Alii fig, or Ficus macclellandii. Both the fiddle-leaf fig and the Alii fig are tolerant houseplants, withstanding being moved around, missed waterings, and lower light. I would avoid plants that have “thin-textured” leaves like ferns and some palms. They are finnicky and will drop their leaves readily and make a mess in the bedroom. For me, the fiddle leaf fig and the Alii fig are good tree-like houseplants. Here are pictures of both trees—-
