Is there a technical reason that would prevent the creators of Fluther to allow us to post pictures directly into our posts, rather than just a link?

Asked by Val123 (12734points) December 8th, 2009

I looked to see if this had been asked before, didn’t see anything.

Being able to see the picture, right before your eyes, can just add a whole new and great dimension to a discussion. I know all the little NING sites have the capability. Can we, please?

There is no technical reason, they probably just don’t want to have to bother with hosting images, or having them break the layout.

It would become cluttered with crap. A lot of us would post good, relevant images, but I’m sure there would be plenty of people posting stupid surveys and all kinds of other junk. I prefer it just the way it is.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities I’ve lost you…stupid surveys?

As @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities says it would quickly bring questions off-topic and clutter the interface. Linking works and keeps everything running well.

Images slow stuff down and the question responses would get wayyyyy toooooooo loooonnnnnnggggg. :)

You didn’t look hard enough ;)

I think Fluther is fine just the way it is; if pictures are necessary to the post then you can always link to them.

Besides, all those fancy images will just slow the website down.

Saves Fluther bandwidth costs too

@Dog See, I have no idea how it works, of course. But…they don’t seem to slow things down on other websites. But, I don’t know the technical workings of Fluther…..anyway, just thought I’d ask. Thanks

I like her just the way that she is. Clutter-free. :)

It’s not that they can’t do this, in fact I’m pretty sure they could, but I think not allowing images directly in the answers is a choice they’ve made. And I think it’s a damn good one.
They’ve made changes over the lifetime of Fluther to improve how linking to a photo (or anywhere) works. Anyone else remember when it would redirect your window as opposed to opening a new one? Plus, the links are red so they stand out. It’s not like you don’t know there’s something there. Also, as people have stated before, images clutter the thread… and frankly, I don’t want to see some of the things people post. Thankyouverymuch.

I have been sorry I clicked on some links. It would be a bummer (and in some cases possibly scar me for life) to not have the choice to look. ;)

1) Clutter
2) Loading times. The more shit you have to load on a single website, the longer it takes. With all images and videos just being links, it takes a very short time.
3) Assholes on the internet. I guarantee you, if images were postable here, we would be seeing goatse and other shock images.

Val123's avatar

@Allie That’s a good point!! @Dog LOL! Yeah…some people sure can post some crap, like NEKID PEOPLE! LOL!

@sarcasm That would suck, for sure.

Thanks for the answers. Just wondered.

I remember Zebra posting a link to something about Mr. Hands here on Fluther. Boy, do I regret clicking on the link.

Dog's avatar

Oh you just had to mention goatse.
I will never get over that. Thankfully I never clicked on Mr. Hands

Val123's avatar

What is “goatse”?

Sarcasm's avatar

You’re better off not knowing.

It’s a hole lotta fun

@Val123: It really doesn’t seem like images make that much of a difference with loading times, does it? But that’s when your connection is actually working. I’ll give you a bit of personal observation here. I have high-speed satellite internet but we’re only allowed to download 200 MB per day. If we go over that limit (and we do from time to time because that is a ridiculously small allownace) we’re kicked back down to slower-than-dialup speeds for 24 hours. When we’re at those super-slow speeds I can’t load any of the sites I regularly use without getting a message that it’s timed out because there is too much stuff to load – except for Fluther. Fluther still works. Slowly! But it works. With images instead of links, I’d be SOL in that department, too.

Also, seriously you are way better off not knowing the details of goatse. Some things cannot be unseen.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@Val123 I was referring to the type of surveys you see on sites like myspace/facebook. Like this type of stuff. No bueno.

SeventhSense's avatar

Yes. The technical reason is they don’t want it.

Val123's avatar

@MacBean Oh! Well…I have dial up. Thanks for he new info.
@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities Bleh!
@Sarcasm Just gimme on hint about what a goatse…just a hint..

SeventhSense's avatar

What’s a goatse? Anything at crotch level of course..

I sent her a PM
