Which is better: Facebook or MySpace?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) December 9th, 2009

I’m not really interested in social networking sites. However, I am interested in the discussions that fall within deciding which one is best. Why do you support your current site? (FaceySpacey and MyBook only, please)

MySpace is pretty much for whores, 12-year-olds, and pedophiles. What more needs to be said?

Fred931's avatar

@DrasticDreamer Back that up, if you don’t mind

Myspace is for kids.

C’mon, people, evidence for the court please!

when i first got a facebook account it was back when you had to be in college and have a valid email ending in .edu to sign up for it and it was pretty cool. when they started letting anyone join it started sucking in my opinion. i was all about myspace for a couple years, but @DrasticDreamer is right, it’s lame now. Facebook all the way! and iamBME!

Myspace isn’t nearly as popular as it used to be. It’s mostly used by bands now because of the ability to post music and such. Myspace is much more customizable, but when Facebook arrived, it pretty much replaced Myspace. So basically, I support Facebook because it’s the one everyone uses.

Do you want to belong to a site where everyone posts half-naked pictures of themselves, is dominated by mostly really young people who constantly fight and gossip about one another, brag about the size of their friend list, and where creepy guys are constantly hitting on people young enough to be their child? Facebook is just a lot more mature compared to MySpace. Facebook, for the most part, is dominated by people in college or older.

Before I knew how MySpace was, I created an account. Once I saw how much more mature Facebook was, I promptly created an account there and deleted my MySpace account.

Well, I wouldn’t say Facebook is dominated by people in college or older. My friends and I used Facebook all throughout high school and there were tons of high schoolers on there. I’d say it’s mostly high school aged and up. I think the more professional look of Facebook and the restrictions and rules make it more prone to maturity.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@DominicX I hear you. I’m not saying people in high school don’t use Facebook, but the majority of users are older than high school age.

I didn’t know myspace was around still

myspace.com If that link doesn’t work I would be very surprised. and that does not have anything to do with the fact that I just tried it 10 seconds ago

Facebook is like a neighborhood bulletin board.
MySpace is like a bar.

I’ve never been on MS & I never will. I’ve heard nothing good about it. Facebook is where my family & friends are. I’m very comfortable there. They’ve just updated their security. It’s not as easy to get in there anymore as it used to be. If you don’t have an account, you’re screwed. From what I hear of MS, it just needs to go away.

I used to use Myspace until 3 years or so ago when all my friends had made Facebook accounts and I (reluctantly) joined because I wanted something new to occupy my time.

Personally I think Facebook is better. Simpler > Annoying friend pages where information is scattered about, annoying music playing, flashing graphics and crap like that. Plus the fact that everyone seems to have a Facebook page kinda wins it.

Other bonuses Facebook has over Myspace:

-Navigation, although not perfect, is much easier especially when looking at photo albums
-Applications are better
-Adverts are less annoying
-Permissions
-The Wall where you can see friend’s updates
-Fanpages

Ways Myspace is better:

-Sometimes status updates are really annoying, but thats what the hide function is for.
-More bands and ability to listen to music

@DrasticDreamer when I did have a myspace account long ago, I didn’t think it was for whores or pedophiles – did you have any specific experiences to make you think so?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir How long ago did you have your account? All it takes is some browsing around on the site to see it now. I really wasn’t kidding when I say that most pictures I come across are of mostly naked young people.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

I vote Facebook. I still have a myspace account but rarely go on it anymore. The only reason I initially liked myspace was because I could personalize my page but now it’s full of drama and whores. So I stick to facebook now. It’s plain but simple and let’s me stay in touch with my family and friends.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@DrasticDreamer I’d say over a year ago for about 2 years before that – I know some profiles looked stupid but that’s like any other site

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Yeah, it’s gone downhill even more since then. The pedophile comment was kind of tongue-in-cheek (although I do know of a few real, and very creepy incidences). I really don’t mean profiles simply look stupid – I started coming across far too many accounts where the only pictures posted (for both male and females) were nothing but the people being naked, or practically naked. And they were all really young. It just grossed and creeped me out too much to stay.

might as well ask, “What is better, AIDS or cancer?”

75movies's avatar

@ragingloli which type of cancer are we talking about?

gggritso's avatar

The median age of Facebook users is 31, I believe.

Facebook is still growing.

Myspace is dying.

Facebook can read and write.

Myspace can’t read and write.

Facebook is good looking.

Myspace is fugly.

Facebook has no STDs.

Myspace is full of STDs.

Facebook is happy.

Myspace is depressed.

There was a lot of press in March of this year about the “aging in” of Facebook, with the largest growing demographic being women over 50. Because of the standardization of the page templates, ease of navigation, and the level of privacy control, Facebook became the social network site for intergenerational social connectivity, and crossed the divide from a fad to a bonafide communication platform. Because of the grounding as a closed college network site, the demographics of Facebook skews to college educated, slightly higher income users, whereas MySpace skews to a younger, less educated demographic.

The one area, though, that MySpace continues to dominate, despite FaceBook’s attempts at inroads into the market, is for music promotion. For all bands and musicians, MySpace is de rigueur for music promotion, replacing local talent and booking agencies. Having demos on MySpace is expected for bands and musicians.

i think facebook.. i used to hate the applications.. now it’s pretty much the only reason i go there

ringaroundtherosie's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater I feel the same. I could care less about Susie being done with finals, Tracy having a headache (again!) and Tina being tired of the cold. I go there to plow, seed and harvest.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I have a friend on there who gives blow by blow of her day. That DOES get very old in a hurry. I post every now & then, but not hour by hour. Ugh!

ChocolateReigns's avatar

I TOTALLY vote for Facebook. ‘Nuf said.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I have both nd if you’d asked me this a year or so ago I would have said that Myspace was better. However, I much prefer Facebook now and although I still check my Myspace account daily I do not spend very much time there at all.

cyn's avatar

ehh. I have a myspace account but rarely even use it. Half of my family uses it, though; that’s why I haven’t deleted it. I have friends there that I certainly don’t want to bring in into facebook. I’m on facebook probably 24/7. It also connects to my tumblr which is a BIG +. I have to agree with @pjanaway most people that use myspace don’t know how to write.
W#@t Da FuCK !5 Di$?

Slick's avatar

Don’t really care for both, but I heard facebook is better than myspace.

jamcanfi74's avatar

Hoestly I think myspace is better. I think facebook is BORING

LethalCupcake's avatar

MYSPACE – because you can personalize it SO much more than you can with facebook!! I can read & write, I’m not a Whore or Pedophile. Nor am I a Child or Musician….. & I still like it?? & that my friend is evidence for the court lol. I do also have a facebook – but its pretty standard to me – the only thing I like better on facebook is the ability to “like” random things… Like say… Cupcakes?? >.<
