General Question

I need to stay awake. We are out of coffee, energy drinks and sugary things.. Help.

Asked by rangerr (15765points) December 10th, 2009

It’s finals week.
It’s 4:15 in the morning.
I have an exam in 2 hours.
I haven’t been able to study for this one until now. Don’t ask.

Problem is, I’m falling asleep. Fast.
How can I stay awake and focus?
Blah, blah, get off Fluther. Shush.

Edit: I don’t know if this even makes sense.. I haven’t slept since two nights ago. Finals suck.

4:15 you live on the east coast huh? Well I usually use music. It animates me so I can get into the “get things done” mode, haha.

Go for a walk. It won’t help with studying but it might keep you up long enough that you are actually awake when the test takes place.

Jumping jacks/pushups/jogging in place will help, temporarily. Or you could go outside for a brief (very cold) walk.

Loud music, like @Axemusica suggests will help, especially if you sing along!

Do you have tea in the house?

The only thing I can think of is to ingest something: nodoz, some sort of schedule 2 medication…can’t say I’d recommend these routes tho. Maybe taking a nap would be best.

@Axemusica Yup. East coast. I’ve got music on, but it’s gotten to the point where no matter how loud or what music, I just want to fall asleep.

I can’t really take a walk.. there’s about 8 kindergartners camping out in the living room.
And no tea in the house.

1. go for a brisk walk
2. take a shower
3. take a power nap (20 min)

this may all sound crazy, however it will reset your bio-clock believe it or not, and when you get up although you will still be tired at least your mind will have had some down time

Oh good christ. Why the hell aren’t you asleep?

Look, not to be a total downer, but your brain is going to have a hell of a time encoding any information under these conditions. If I were you I’d go to bed right now, wing it during the exam, and call this one a learning experience.

Eat something good for you like oatmeal. it can carry you thru and add some brain power, too

rangerr's avatar

You guys ever get so tired you feel stoned? Yeah.

@nikipedia I’m not the only one awake! I’ve got a few classmates online, too.. I guess you’re right though. I don’t know if I’m actually gonna take anything in, or just read the notes.

@rangerr ~ stay hydrated, avoid sugary snacks (they’ll just elevate your blood sugar level and then make you crash) and try to get a nap… it will go a way…

jrpowell's avatar

The problem is if you fall asleep will you actually be able to wake up in 90 minutes or will you sleep through the alarm?

rangerr's avatar

That’s what I’ve been debating. I’m about 99% sure I wouldn’t even hear it.

evegrimm's avatar

@rangerr, I sooo hear you. Good luck, whatever you do.

Is there anyone that could wake you up if you slept for an hour? I think @nikipedia is right about this one. You’re kind of screwed, no matter what you do. But, if you can, rest for an hour and have someone wake you up. You need at least a little sleep if you’re going to pull this off.

rangerr's avatar

Yeah, I’ve got a few people who can wake me up.
I suppose I can sleep now then wake up a little earlier and quick-read the notes.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

I’d try, if I were you. I know how you feel about finals. Good luck, and go get some rest! :)

If the sleep thing doesn’t work (sometimes I’m so tired, but can’t sleep), try drinking some ice-cold water. Good luck!

Zen_Again's avatar

I take power naps.

Here’s a cramming tip from a crazy buddy of mine: Get a plastic box about 10” by 10”.. Fill it with nails and asorted metal crap. When you feel sleepy shake the box as hard as you can close to your ear.

rooeytoo's avatar

I agree with @mcbealer – avoid sugary stuff. Have a quick nap, make sure someone reliable will wake you up. When you do get up eat protein, take your test then go back to bed and sleep sleep sleep.

Good luck.

@rangerr I’m in the same situation right now. Good luck on your finals!

How’d it go? I was supposed to do my all-nighter last night but then I got distracted.

rangerr's avatar

I ended up falling asleep working on Biology and woke up hugging my notebook.
Final went pretty well though. It was only 25 questions, so lack of sleep didn’t affect much.

Thanks guys!
