I have a pair of shoes - black new balance walking shoes. They always smell inside. Is there a way to take care of this?

Asked by Zen_Again (9931points) December 10th, 2009

From the beginning they’ve been this way.

I do not have this problem with any other pairs of shoes of mine.

Smell how? Like funky new shoe or funky old shoe, or what?

It could be how they were processed. If you have clumping cat litter, then pour some in and leave overnight. See if that helps.

If it’s just a weird new smell (like plastic and rubber), I don’t know what you’d do.. maybe try @gemiwing‘s suggestion.

If it smells like icky old shoe, you may need to wear them only every other day to give them a chance to dry out. My sister has quite seriously the most stinky feet I have ever encountered and I have found that spraying a liberal dose of Lysol in there and letting it dry can work wonders. I turned a pair of her shoes around in less than a day (much to our relief, let me tell you).

baking soda. put some inside.

Have you replaced the shoe insoles? Sometimes the material harbors bacteria, which causes the smell.

I was going to suggest removing the insoles and washing them. I just throw the whole sneaker in the wash with my clothes and let them air dry. Most sneakers are washable. I have a pair of New Balance that are probably over 10 years old that I wash when they get muddy.

Are you wearing socks?

Sometimes I swear my son’s foot sweat just doesn’t mix with certain shoes. They reek.

I suggest storing them outside, sprinkling them with baking soda and liberally spraying Febreeze.

But that, pooping, and putting on a bandaid are my solutions for most issues. You could try these too if nothing else works.

Putting them in the freezer overnight is supposed to help. Also kitty litter, baking soda, or dryer sheets.

Put them in the washing machine and let them air dry.
