Have you ever seen a speed zone sign that doesn't end with the number "5" or "0"?

Asked by Raine (330points) December 11th, 2009

I know some people who have seen 7 mph signs, but I’ve never seen one…have you?

Yes, 12 and 24. Schools and back country mountain roads.

At the Country Club down the road from the office, the limit is 11,

WHY?

Speed limit signs that don’t end in 5 or 0 are almost always on private streets or parking lots.

King_of_Sexytown's avatar

Here in Montana they didn’t even have a speed limit until about 15 years ago.

At an RV “campground”, there was a speed limit sign for 7 MPH.

How does that work? Why not just round off?

I can just see the heated debates over 10 or 15 MPH.

Ok… Ok… Let settle on 12.

no lol !

My understanding is that you’ll typically see this on privately maintained roads.

And in any case, it’s done to catch your attention and make you think about it in the hopes that you’ll be more attentive to actually keeping your speed down.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a “non-standard” value above 25mph.

There is an 8½ MPH speed limit sign in my hometown! (Brea, CA). I always wanted to steal it.

DominicX's avatar

No, I don’t think I have. I will attempt to take a picture of one if I ever do. :)

@LC_Beta – Very cool. If I lived there it would already be on my wall.

Strauss's avatar

I’ve only seen them on private drives, like @robmandu says, mostly to grab your attention so you’ll actually take it easy.

I’ve seen a 12 mph sign on this mountain road in Pennsylvania. I imagine most speed limit signs with irregular values are on such roads.

I once saw a 5½ mph speed limit sign in a parking lot in Buffalo, NY. I sort of wanted to get pulled over for going 6, but there was a sad lack of police in the vicinity.

At the Sandestin resort in Florida, there is an imposed 17mph speed limit carefully guarded by speed cameras.

Fred931's avatar

@Beta_Orionis That last one has to be false unless it occurs somewhere outside the US; the maximum speed for any speed limit is 85, and that has only existed in a select few counties in Texas.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@Fred931 we’ll see. I’m asking the photographer. Although whatever the case may be, the OP didn’t ask for signs exclusively in los EEUU…

jackm's avatar

@Fred931
The Natl Govt doesn’t control the speed limit. That law was repealed in 1995 IIRC

Slick's avatar

No I never have.lol

sndfreQ's avatar

Disneyland parking lots have a speed limit of 14mph.

croberts119's avatar

No. Since you highlighted the 0 and 5 as the example, I assume you’re asking about road signs placed on public use roads by your DoT or TA. On private roads, sure I’ve seen everything you can think of as far as speed limits: 2, 8, 12, 18½, etc but on public roads, every US state I have been to in the US and every where I have driven in Canada, Egypt, Israel and Iraq all have speed limits ending in a 0 or a 5.
