General Question

Please, can somebody explain this sudden influx of new members?

Asked by holden (8450points) December 13th, 2009

I apologize if the question has already been asked. I go away for a couple of days and when I get back there are like 50 new jellies and everyone’s talking about AB or somefin. What’s going on around here?

AB = AnswerBag, another question and answer site. A few days ago the site underwent some big changes that everyone hated, so they came here.

Ah, just noticed the banner. AB = answerbaggers. Still, what the heck is that?

AB refugees = new Flutherites!

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

No problem. Must have been quite a surprise to come to Fluther one day and see all these new faces!

refugees… that are so very welcome by the way!

The changes over at AB were just too drastic and all at once. It has scared a lot of people away .. it’s just not the same “animal” anymore.

Answerbag is a Q and A site where many of us used to practically live on. We made good friends with several people. The site used to be a lot of fun. Then it sold itself out to appeal to the teeny bopper generation making it more facebookey and doubled the ads. It looks nothing like it used to at all. It was very sad to lose the old bag. I am an old AB veteran like so many of the new jellies here were too.

Can’t we all…just get along????????...lolol!

AB started off as a social experiment. You put rats (users) in a maze, allow bad things to happen to them (DRing) to watch their responses, completely ignore them for YEARS by leaving the same site malfunctions going wrong, then after you get lucrative money deals, you completely change the format, isolating everyone from each other and take away the one reedeming quality the site has, then call them whiners after you ignored them for years because well…..let’s face it. That’s what a sociopath does. Run along now, and try to find reason to file suit.

AB is AnswerBag. It was an excellent Q&A site until a few days ago, when the staff made modifications for more advertising revenue, and the site went down the shitter. A lot of our members ended up here on Fluther. We were a tight knit community, so lots of people moved here because their friends and contacts also moved here.

@phillis Hey now, they gave the die hards an edit button today in forums,LOL.. It’s all about the money, if this mass exodus effects the bottom line, they will fix it or go under. Right now they are saying that the numbers have not been effected. I think that is a little on the false side of things but.. Nice to see you again!

phillis's avatar

SOULSEARCHER!!!! I was going to email you again if I didn’t see your butt over here. Damn, you already got 211 points?! Here…have some more! WooooHooooo!!!
As a dyslexic die hard, I am solidly in favor of an edit button. It’s such a simple thing to offer, don’t you think?
Oh! Go here for the latest updates on AB:

The bottom line is, we ARE their bottom line.

@phillis I just got here yesterday, been bouncing in to AB to see what if anything they are doing to keep what is left of the long term members, Read your message to them btw, Loved it. I agree the edit button was a good thing, but seriously, do they think that is going to be enough. In my opionion, which counts for just about nothing, ole Lex and a few of the others should be looking for new jobs. Bad planning on a site that depends on it’s users. ”:-)

phillis's avatar

Oh! I see what you meant now. Yeah…I hardly think an edit button is going to do it. On the other link I gave you, HungyGuy says they have a host of things they’re changing. I’m sure it’s so that they dont HAVE to look for other jobs. I don’t believe for a minute that the mass exodus hasn’t affected them. Pfffft!
I don’t want them destroyed, the way some ex members do. I just wanted to give them a good hard pinch to wake thier asses up. But I’m still not going back. I don’t care WHAT they change. The neglect went on too long.

@phillis I get a kick out of reading the crap they are slinging over there, they are acting like they are listening now, yet still maintaining the “don’t like it leave” attitude and that all the old members<who made the site IMO> are just whining and will be back. I don’t want to see the site go under, but I don’t want to be there if all of you are here! Kind of got used to the friendly faces and names of some of you. There seem to be some pretty nice people on this site, hopefully I will get to know some of the original Flutherites too.

phillis's avatar

GA! Some will certainly go back, and that’s who they’re appealing to. They won’t see the mixed signals, or the still present attitudes towards members, or any of that stuff. And I’ll still be their friend, because people are people. I know very well what abuse looks like, even if it doesn’t include a thump on the skull. I’ve had enough! I live for happiness. I can forgive and move on, but I’m not moving backwards. The people here sent me into culture shock with the warm reception. This is how we should have been treated all along.

YCLYHO's avatar

theres absolutely no way i will be going back :(
