I’m assuming you are referring to an entire article rather than just the quest?

Since I’m too poor to subscribe to the Times all the way out here in Mich. could you either give a link or a brief synopsis?

I have a few thoughts about it but don’t want to go off into the wild blue yonder on an unrelated tangent.

G’day skfinkel,

Thank you for your question.

Sometimes in life, the perfect is the enemy of the good, People are sometimes so busy seeking perfection that they throw away something good,

Regards

There’s a Greek saying:

”το καλύτερο είναι εχθρός του καλού”

wond by word translation: the “best” is good’s enemy/free translation: “Good” is sometimes better than “perfect”. Means that, when you give up on something really good to achieve something better there is always the possibility that you end up with nothing.

I sometimes agree with this concept, it has a bizarre logic.

Certainly not in my world. If I stop at good enough, people might die.

Can you link the article?

I work in data entry. You would think that since they sell the data to customers who want accurate data, that accurate data would be of the utmost importance to my employer. Not so, it turns out! They want the most accurate data that can be obtained in a reasonably quick amount of time – meaning that if it makes me significantly faster to leave in some typos, I should do it. The idea here is that our licensees only want to pay $X for the data, and sometimes we’d lose money by pouring over it to make sure it’s absolutely perfect. Thus, “good enough” is our “perfect.”

Not to me. Good enough is simply getting by. Great, however, is, well, GREAT.

For many people , especially the younger people of today… “Good Enough” is all they want…and apparently NEED….

That is a sad commentary on our country and world , isn’t it ?

As for myself; I have ALWAYS strived for EXCELLENCE and GREATNESS… and still do at 60 years Young .

@HighShaman . You and I think alike here.

@keithold: good day to you.
@HighShaman: thank goodness for you and others like you.
@UScitizen: thank you for high standards, obviously we are all the beneficiaries.

I just looked for a link, and couldn’t find it in today’s paper, but the other connections were hilarious. The reason this so resonated with me was because I just wrote a funny little piece basically using just these words. And of course, “Blank is the new Blank” based on “brown is the new black” is also getting to be kind of a funny construction, used in so many contexts. Sorry I couldn’t get the link, though.

And; what a GREAT question for us to agree on…. Thanks !

No, but sometimes good enough, is good enough. Great, better, excellent are great, but it has created a disposable mentality. So many people are never satisfied these days. They want bigger houses, better relationships, newer cars, upward is not always onward.
