What do I do with a tv that has broken down after only 2 years? (more details enclosed)

Asked by sakura (8267points) December 14th, 2009

My husband and I bought a tv in NZ 2 years ago, things didn’t work out as planned whilst we were over there (we missed home too much) so we moved back to the UK. We have an extended warranty on the tv, which states that if the item breaks down we have to pay postage to the nearest store to get it looked at by an approved engineer (in this case we’ll have to post to Southern Ireland) this will cost in the region of £400 for a round trip. Is there anything we can do? Should Panasonic be held accountable as the tv is only 2 years old? They state that they could send out an engineer in the uk, but the insurance company won’t recognise their work as they are not approved by their company.
Do I have any more rights as a customer that is not happy her tv has stopped working after 2 years?

What is really annoying is that someone has very kindly loaned us a tv that is 11 years old cost a fraction of the price and is still going strong!

I would drive it over there myself and save the postage one way.

Hmmm. Give Panasonic UK a call and explain your situation to them, they might or they might not but you can try.
www.panasonic.co.uk . Let me know how it went.

I called panasonic they said tough, thats what you get for taking the risk buying a tv outside the uk

this has always been a nasty issue, the mfg (Mastushita, panasonic’s parent company) builds a product then sells it to a distributor – Panasonic NZ in this case. The distributor NOT the mfg is the one who carries the warranty so they can only cover items in their own country. The warr will differ from country to country some items sold in the UK may have a 5 year warranty but in the USA they are covered for one year or less. sounds like they have a servicer in a reasonable distance to you – they would be within thier legal rights to require you to use a servicer in NZ, that postage would be nasty.

A customer last month was in with a 279$ set they bought in Asia, for warr service they must crate & ship the unit to Thailand for repair with postage (over 1,400$) paid by the customer. At closing time I noticed it in my trash bin.

we can post it to Ireland but even that cost nearly £400 round trip, I am very tempted to just get a panasonic approved engineer to have a look at it to see whats wrong with it before I think about shipping it over there! Its all such a pain in the backside!

@mastermind Panasonic is one of the best outthere, most will do nothing for the consumer

at the moment Panasonic have not been very helpful, I was in tears down the phone, I know there are people out there with a lot worse problems, but we bought that tv in good faith, from a reputable shop, not some two bit dodgy dealer, so surely we must have some rights some where, how can panasonic justify saying its tough you didn’t buy a british model, when all there tvs are made in china/japan??

NadaNormal's avatar

@sakura what is the model number and what problem are you having with it??

sakura's avatar

the model number isth 42pv700az
and basically it just stopped working… in the middle of a programme too!!

@sakura send me a PM with the name of your warr insurance co & what town you live in, let me dig a little for you – I’m on the wrong side of the planet for direct assist but know how the system works & how to work it
