My Internet is not Working?

Asked by hungerforpizza (247points) December 14th, 2009

My desktop is having problems connecting to the Internet. First, i checked if it was the router but my laptop still can use wifi. Next, i tested to see if it was the Ethernet cable by using it with my laptop (and turning of wifi) but the Ethernet cable worked fine. After that, i tested to see if it was the desktop Ethernet port but that works fine. I have restarted the router and the computer and unplugged and re-plugged everything. What should I do now?

If you have done everything on your end, the next step is to call your ISP.

Could be a DNS problem. I’m using the DNS servers from Google and they work great. I’m not sure how to change them on windows but it looks like this on a Mac.

If the laptop works on the ethernet cable (or wireless) then it is not your ISP, the network is fine. Something is probably wrong with that machine, possibly the network card, but possibly software. Have you tried rebooting?

Yes i have restarted the desktop

If this is a windows machine, go to start->connect to->show all connections, then make sure that your local area connection is enabled. you can also right click that connection and click on repair, but I don’t know that that will help.

Yeah, like @Snarp said, it is not your ISP since your laptop is working with it. Probably is a hardware or software issue with the desktop.

” Local Are Connection———- Network cable unplugged——- REaltek PCIe GBE Family Controller ” It’s not unplugged… and trouble shooting doesn’t bring anything up

I would give this a shot

http://download.cnet.com/System-Mechanic/3000-2094_4-10030183.html?tag=mncol

it has saved my machine more times then I can count and I have it set up to do scan every other hour on all systems and if any errors hardware issues or anything comes up it warns me right away what the problem is or why the system is running slower then usual and how to fix it

most all I would say over the years 99 % of all issues it has found it has automatically fixed by itself with no problems I would give it a shot maybe there is a driver or some error that windows is not picking up it will fix 30 day free trial it cant hurt

Can you go into your router setup via http://192.68.1.1 and check your settings there? If you don’t know how to handle that without help, call ISP support from the media company you use and they’ll walk you through it.

If it says network cable unplugged and it’s plugged in, then it is likely a short either in the cable or on your ethernet card, possibly right at the port. That’s not a guarantee, but it’s likely. Try jiggling the cable around to see if you get anything. If you can jiggle and get internet but it goes right back out, then it’s definitely a short. Try a new ethernet cable. If that fails, you may have to replace the ethernet card. That’s not hard or expensive.
