How can I disable my home's ADT monitor?

Asked by Lacroix (537points) December 14th, 2009

I just bought this house, and discovered there was an ADT home security monitor in it. As it was “dead”, I thought nothing of it (except that I’d have to get it removed one day), but during a recent power surge it started to go off.

Now it beeps every 5–10 minutes, and informs me that it cannot detect a phone line. This is unsurprising, as I keep a cell phone, but I can’t get it to stop beeping! How do I turn this thing off?!

Can you “pop” the cover off? If you get the faceplate off it might be obvious how to disable it.

I’m good at breaking things. If you can post a pic it would be fab.

Why don’t you just call the company and ask them to remove it ?

@HighShaman I’m not sure the company would be willing to come out at 9:45pm.

@johnpowell I can’t pop off the faceplate. There aren’t any screws, just buttons. It fits right into my wall.

@Lacroix If you tell them what the problem is…. I’m betting that they will….

It can’t hurt ; Just a phone call.

There will be a control panel box somewhere, you need to unplug the power going to the control panel not the keypad and then open the control panel and disconnect the battery.

The control panel will usualy be in the basement, for most systems its a metal box usualy with an ADT sticker on it.

I’d call them and ask them how to disable it. They’re staffed 24/7. Also, check your fuse box and see if the alarm is on a separate breaker switch.
