Do you do it for the Lurve?

Asked by ParaParaYukiko (6116points) December 16th, 2009

I imagine everyone loves getting Lurve; the show of appreciation by other jellies is one of the things I quite enjoy about Fluther. People with 10K lurve or more are acknowledged for their ability to write Great Questions and Answers, and/or their longevity on this site. But to what extent do you think you care about getting Lurve?

On sites like deviantArt, the amount of pageviews is equated to popularity, and people will go around posting things advertising their gallery for the sake of getting more pageviews. The idea behind this is that the amount of pageviews one has is directly related to how good one’s artwork is. But people with thousands (or millions) of pageviews aren’t always necessarily great artists; they may simply cater to the tastes of the masses (i.e. sexy ladies or fanart of popular shows).

I know pageviews on dA and Lurve are different in a lot of ways, but do you think the mentality of wanting Lurve/pageviews could apply to both? I’m just curious about how you all personally think of Lurve and what it means for you. :)

oh yes I did it all for lurve – now I have two kids…
seriously though I like seeing which of my answers received lurve but beyond that, I don’t care too much

We all need a little of LURVE in our lives.

I do it for the money they pay me.

I don’t do it for lurve, but it is a nice perk.

If I try to imagine Fluther without any kind of feedback at all—no GAs, no GQs—that would take a lot away from the experience for me. It’s not the numbers, but if there were no way of knowing whether or not what I say actually connects with anyone, it would be a bit like shouting into a well. I don’t just say this stuff for the sake of saying it; I say it to reach people, and it’s gratifying to know when that happens.

I enjoy getting feed back via the lurve, but I don’t do it just for that. I really enjoy helping people and I really do apperciate the help I get here for my questions. The lurve is like the whipped cream on a big fat chunk of apple pie. =P

I do it for the puns ;)

I do it more to help people. I feel there’s a lot of knowledge that I can share with others, and I love when good advice goes far.

But I mean, come on, who doesn’t love lurve?

If I were after points/lurve I wouldn’t be a member on a forum too. I’m not on any site long enough to make chasing points worth my while.
Points are just an extra. My main motivation is to converse with people, have fun and making a friend or two.

I do it for both the knowledge shared and knowledge gained…haha, and often strictly to kill time at work. Admittedly getting acknowledged for a good answer is nice, but if that went away I’d still be here.

I write a hell of a lot of stupid answers, so I have to say No. Sometimes, though, as I’m writing an answer, I know it will be well-received. I’m cognizant of that stuff. But I don’t write answers just to get lurve. That seems to defeat the purpose of being here.

Only Barry White does that!

Love is nice but it’s not my main motivation. I’d be just as pleased to have a GA/GQ tally that went question by question and didn’t add up to anything displayable.

I do it for the fun of it. Of course, it’s always nice to be recognized with lurve .. but that’s not why I’m here or why I do this. I enjoy the interaction with folks here and it’s a BIG plus if you learn something and make a friend or two along the way.

I agree with @Harp as I too like to know which of my answers people have enjoyed reading and/or agree with. The lurve encourages me to really think about what I am about to say before just jumping in.

When I take the time to type up decent answer/question, yes, if feels good to get lurve. When the OP types up a question and they need help for whatever reason, if I’m able to help them , and I get some lurve for that.. it feels great.

I truly don’t do it for the lurve, but, it’s nice.

Do I do it for the Lurve? OHHHHH YEAH! I lurve the lurve! All the way!!!!! GREAT Place and equally GREAT People on here!!!! Great Question!

Some days it’s about lurve, and some days it’s about being a part of a great site with great people. I think most days it’s both. :)

thriftymaid's avatar

I imagine we all do it for the same reasons.

daemonelson's avatar

At the moment, I don’t care about lurve.
Honestly, I don’t really understand it yet.
But I don’t doubt that eventually, I’ll be answering and asking for lurve, as well as my urge to start arguments.

I do lurve my lurve, but it is not why I do it, I do it cause it feels so good.

Lurve probably indicates both good answers/questions as well as longevity, so after a while it probbaly gets pointless since it’s all pretty default I’d say, but not making a statement of it.
Kinda basing this on the AB point system where there were so many people and dramaticz that points were pretty pointless, although I’m willing to guess that it’s not the same here.
Sure getting Lurve is awesome, but it’s secondary after interaction anyways, no matter how I might end up changing my mind about how Lurve really works around here in the future.

Some things I look at are people giving it to their friends so the initial indication might be based on a biased intent, others forgetting to give Lurve even if they liked the question or answer, and my personal opinion that because a question or answer doesn’t have any, it doesn’t make it any less a good answer, or question.

So of course I’m here for Lurve, but if it didn’t exist, certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world.
