Why does the Canadian government insist on not granting Canadian medical schools with more seats to qualified medical school applicants?

Asked by LeopardGecko (1237points) December 16th, 2009

The Canadian government constantly complains about the lack of Doctors in Canada, but refuses to change the seats available in all of it’s medical universities. Why do you think the government is allowing this to happen when it can be fixed very easily?

I don’t live in Canada, but could it be that they want quality over quantity? Maybe a lot of their applicants don’t meet their standards.

That doesn’t make any sense. Canada, land of free health care, doesn’t have enough doctors? How do they keep up with everything?

I guess I should have added that in.

I’ve reviewed the Canadian Medical School Application Guide for UBC and other Universities in Canada and more than half of the applicants are identical and it has been admitted by frustrated Universities that more than half of the applicants are qualified enough to enter their medical program.. The acceptance rate is a little less than 15% based on 268 seats and 1800 applicants for the University of BC

@Miles – In Canada we do have free health care, but we have VERY long waits for non-life threatening illnesses. We don’t keep up with everything, the reason why is because the lack of doctor’s. Most Canadians don’t have a personal doctor, causing our system to become extremely backed up, my Dad has to wait 6 months to get an MRI scan for his back.

I know that one CBC interview stated that there is plently of doctors but they all want too much time off and only want to work office hours during the weekday with 2 months vacation and I guess the system Is hoping doctors will work longer with less pay

i always thought that doctors and nurses should get some school paid(if not most of their school) by the government since there is a shortage for both in canadian hospitals. there should definetely be more seats available in med. school.
