What are your thoughts on the human intution?

Asked by shadowofdeath (437points) December 17th, 2009

recently i have become interested in the human intuition and the fact that we can see up to 3 seconds into the future (there have been studies on this). do you think we can harness this power maybe even augment it?

Seeing up to 3 seconds in the future is news to me. Got a source for that?

Wait…wait…okay. I think intuition works. I am now intuiting that my lunch is ready…hooray!!!

Certain hunches, I believe, are all about our bodies working faster than our perception sometimes and it’s all a result of many many many years of evolution – Gladwell explains it better in his books

shadowofdeath's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir could you give me a few sources please

CMaz's avatar

Yes, it is not “seeing into the future”, it is a delay of information in the brain.

shadowofdeath's avatar

@ChazMaz im unsure as how it could be a delay if your subconcious is reacting up to 3 seconds before an event

and thanks for that source ill be taking a look at that

wundayatta's avatar

Can we define intuition, please. It sounds like you’re talking about precognition.

CMaz's avatar

Yes that is what is being described.

A gut feeling is another name for intuition. Yes it does exist and it’s practically impossible to explain it scientifically. Animals demonstrate this to good effect. Like a dog that runs to the door maybe 15mins before its owner comes in.

Something I wrote about twelve months ago:

None of us can know what will happen in the future,
but we can predict what will happen.
you just need to concentrate on the road ahead,
how well you predict the future depends on how well you can read the road.

I have come to know, trust and love my own.

shadowofdeath's avatar

@daloon and @ChazMaz reacher nailed it right on the head that is exactly what im referring to

shadowofdeath's avatar

@Pazza that is true but what is that road and how are we able to read it, what inside us causes that feeling.

shadowofdeath's avatar

@Reacher thank you that is what im referring to, but do you think that it is possible to harness this talent?

AstroChuck's avatar

@shadowofdeath- I had the strangest feeling you were going to ask this question.

CMaz's avatar

“Like a dog that runs to the door maybe 15mins before its owner comes in.”
How do you know that if you are not home?
:-)
Do not deny the possibility. In some vague form.

@ChazMaz If I understand, things are just as they are. If I don’t understand, things are just as they are. ZEN

My ex partner (The Witch) when she was still living at home was always causing agro and winding the family up. Every six months or so they would have a big bust-up, in the lead up to those bust-ups I would start to get increasingly agitated, an I could swear that something bad was going to happen, I could feel the tension building up within the family almost physically, and I could almost guarantee when the next fight would occur.

I can’t put my finger on exactly what was giving me this feeling, though I think it was a mixture of body language, and on some level some form of projected negativity from everyone involved.

I do beleive in intuition, just over twelve months ago I had my appendix removed, and although the doctors were convinced it wasn’t, somehow I just knew it was, the pain was on the wrong side, I wasn’t unwell, my movements (for want of a better expression!) where normal, and I had a sensitivity issue on the skin on my abdomen in the area of my appendix which felt like a burning whenever I brushed over the skin lightly.

Anyway the quacks were convinced it was an abdominal ahernia, and operated in an exploritory fasion to find ‘a sizable mass’ as the surgeon described it.

The point is, coincidence or not, I was convined my appendix was FOOKED.

Interestingly though, I had a dream whilst I was under anaesthetic. But I guess thats another discussion.

@Pazza I think the answers will be found scientifically through Quantum Physics. Watch this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEzRdZGYNvA

CMaz's avatar

@Reacher – Ok, that made my head hurt. :-)

Pazza's avatar

@Reacher
I’ve seen that a couple of times, even though it made for kids haha.
I surpose thats quite profound really when you think about it, that maybe atoms in other people can become entangled on a quantum level with that of my own.

Though my personal view is that the atoms are not entangled, but one and the same.
Also I think waves are waves untill there observed, and then become particles, or any interaction with a wave produces particles. That could quite easily be sullshit since I’m no quantum physicist by any stretch of the imagination. lol

I can’t even do long division now, how bad is that! (bloody calculators!)

Reacher's avatar

@ChazMaz @Pazza. I’m in the same boat my friends. I have to have stuff explained to me these days in kids form as well as getting pissed off with calculators. LOL

@everyone thank you all for your answers i will not be back for 3 week but please dont stop conversing i will be checking all of them and replying in three weeks thanks again i find this topic extremely interesting

My family is extremely intuitive—especially with our kids. When we were kids (I’m 43 now), if we ever got hurt or went to the hospital, EVERY time we walked in the door the phone would be ringing and it was my grandma – even 2 in the morning. She knew something was wrong (note: this is before cell phones and answering machines). My mom is like that with my brother and me too. I didn’t really understand how strong and natural is was until I had my kids which are 23 and 12 now. I just “know” if they are hurt. Its weird, I can’t explain it, but its a comfort in a way. When my oldest was in the Navy and out to sea, I worried of course, but I just “knew” if they were in the middle of a mission—it was like I could feel his emotions. Everyone has it to some degree. If you’ve ever had a hunch or gut feeling, that is intuition.

By seeing into the future, I really think it means we have the intellect and the knowledge of experience to be able to deduce how the imediate future will pan out to a very high degree of accuracy. I think it’s reasonable to think about augmenting the ability, and people even do! Strategy! As for actually seeing into the future, and knowing exactly what it will hold, I don’t think so (personally.)

“The only real valuable thing is intuition.”

Reacher's avatar

. @shadowofdeath I’m not sure we will ever be able to harness this ability. It seems more attuned to the animal kingdom which are innocent in their life endeavours, unlike humans

mattbrowne's avatar

In parts intuition relies on memories created by our unconscious mind when processing sensory input. Our focus is always on just a small portion of it. Some neuroscientists say it’s just 100 bit/s.

If you’re interested in this stuff have a look here (gorilla experiment):

shadowofdeath's avatar

@Reacher though you have a point the things seem to be more attuned to innocence. everything i have heard or read stated that the state our mind was at a young age say 5 is what we should strive for. not intelligence wise but the purity and innocence of that mind that has not been reformed by the cruel world we live in. maybe there in lies the secrets of our minds we do so strive to find without avail
