Trying to decide on a Christmas present for my boyfriend that would also be something i would like since it will be at my house. PS3 or Wii?

Asked by Dezimae (186points) December 17th, 2009

he’s been saying for forever that he wants some kind of gaming consol at my house to play and to invite people over and play. he will be moving in in January so its not like he wont get to use it but only every once in a while. i like the idea of a PS3 because you can play blue ray discs on it, but thats really as far as my want of a PS3 goes. with a Wii i would actually play it and get a Wii Fit for it as well. what would you do in my situation?

Do the Wii!
My hubby and I are getting one for x-mas.
Another benefit of the Wii (which I think ps3 already has)...coming soon you will be able to play directly from your netflix instant watch queue to the tv!
Awesome!
And, it’s much more fun to play together. We are getting the new Mario and the Tiger Woods golf (along w/ what it comes with)

I don’t know anything about the PS3, but we do have a Wii and love it. Santa brought it for the kids last year, but my husband and I have almost as much fun with it.

We chose it because the Wii had a lot more kid-friendly games available than the other game consoles we looked at. We also have a Wii Fit, which is fun but not nearly as effective as going to the gym. I’ve heard that the Wii Fit Personal Trainer is better. It also costs a lot less. A few weeks ago we finally got the Wii working with our wireless internet connection, and that is fun to play around with. I’m looking forward to the Netflix option @jenandcolin mentioned above!

This year we’re giving the kids Mario Kart for Wii with those steering wheel game controllers. I can’t wait to try it out!

Agreed with the above, the Wii is probably a lot more fun as a “together” device. Also more fun if you ever have any younger relatives or friends (or kids of friends) around. That’s cool that it will soon have Netflix, the PS3 recently introduced it, and the Xox 360 has had it for quite a while. On the PS3, to use Netflix, you have to insert a special DVD (which they send you for free) in order for it to run. I hear they’re fixing that sometime during 2010 so the disc won’t be necessary.

At the end of the day, it depends what you want to do with it, really. The PS3 gives you some great versatility that your Wii doesn’t. For instance, if you decide to use the Netflix feature (on either), that means you need to join Netflix, which isn’t all that expensive per month. The PS3 is also a blu-ray player, though, so if you have a hi-def TV, that’s a really nice thing. Also, the PS3 is one of the best all around media streaming devices (music, pictures, video) that I’ve ever owned, even better than the Xbox 360. So…if you want to use it for more than just games, these are some considerations. FYI, I have all 3 types of consoles in my house, so we’ve had a great chance to compare & contrast!

The WII is a fav in our house for some really fun games though my boys would kill for a PS3 and I think the PS3 is for hard core gaming and may just hijack your beau away from you!

Dezimae's avatar

@Cruiser hahaha, i dont think so. he isnt much for gaming, he just likes to play every once in a while. like if we dont have anything to do one night it would be nice to just chill out and play games and not spend any money going out or whatever. i dont know. i am thinking im gonna get the PS3 bc thats what he really wants and i can still use it for bluray :) and then ill buy myself a wii later on.

I’m actually a huge PS3 fanboy but when it comes to group entertainment, the Wii’s your best bet. Cheaper too.

I agree the Wii is far more entertaining for two. Bowling, tennis, baseball. It’s not a hardcore shoot-em-up kind of game system, so my son kind of let my Wife and I inherit it. We use it for Wii fit.
