Have you ever quit a job because your employer was a jerk?

Asked by Mavericksjustdoinganotherflyby (951points) December 17th, 2009

I went back to work for a guy I worked for about 9 yrs. ago thinking that he may have changed. After about 4 days into working for him it all came back to me why I quit 9 years ago in the first place. He demeans and intimidates his employees, is incredibly unorganized, displays irrational behavior as if he’s on cocaine or meth, and is just an all around jackass. I Lasted about 2 months to the day until I couldn’t stand it anymore and quit.
Have you ever worked for someone like this? And if so, how did you go about quitting?

Yep, when I was much younger…and I did it on Christmas Eve. I had taken enough of his verbal abuse and his bullshit and I told him, “So long, I’m out of here.” I headed for the door and he grabbed my arm and said, “You can’t quit of Christmas Eve.” I rather calmly told him to remove his hand from my arm or I would remove his hand from HIS arm and advised him that he could try and stop me by standing in front of the door, but that would simply lead to him taking his Christmas meal through a straw.

No, I haven’t. But I have SO wanted to. I have found that life is full of jerks and I needed the job, so I adjusted. Or simply did my best to ignore them. I should have quit though. The damage that the stress did to me wasn’t worth the paycheck.

Another woman and I both quit our jobs because of a boss we had. He was condescending, disrespectful and rude. He had been disciplined for it, but his bosses simply did not follow through. We felt it was hopeless there and both left. We found out after we quit that he was fired for treating more folks like this and they finally took it seriously!

No, as much as I have had a few.

Work is about money.

No, I’ve not had the financial stability to make that move ever.

I’ve never quit a job because my boss was a jerk to me.
One time however, I did quit when I found out my boss was scamming people. I didn’t want to be a part of it so I reported his ass and left.

Oh yeah. Not only was he a complete asshole, but he was disgusting in every way. -He was racist.
-He was sexist.
-He talked about his former sex life with his ex.
-He bragged about violently shaking his girlfriend’s autistic son to get through to him.
-He lied. He lied to cover lies, hurting me and my career.
-He scrubbed his teeth and braces with a dry toothbrush all day long and kept the toothbrush laying around random places in his office. You had to watch where you put your things.
-His office smelled like sausage and cologne.
-When I told him I would be taking maternity leave, he said I would not have a job with him if I tried to come back.
-He told me that my upcoming maternity leave was making him physically ill.
-He couldn’t so much as figure out how to work his email account.
-He referred to himself as the “King of Baltimore” and said when he worked in Vegas that he was the “King of Vegas.”
-He mentioned multiple times that he didn’t think my husband and I could afford our baby. The hilarious thing is that he didn’t make much more than my husband at the time.

There were many things that lead up to me leaving. The day I quit, I had just had enough. He accused me of doing something that I didn’t do. There was a misunderstanding between me and the girl who held my position before me. It was harmless. Nobody was harmed or even inconvenienced, yet this ex-boss of mine raged for hours about it. He blew through my office, dumping papers on the floor, looking through the files on my computer; he just couldn’t believe that it was a simple misunderstanding.

Finally, after ranting for about 3 hours over something that did not matter, he went to his boss’s office and shut the door and began yelling some more. I called my husband and asked if he thought it was ok that I quit that day, instead of two weeks from then, when I was supposed to be on leave. He said “yes” so I went to my office and collected my things and left.

When I got home, there was a message on my phone begging me to come back. I didn’t. I felt awesome. I’m not usually one to leave someone hanging, even if I don’t like the job or something, but this bastard fully deserved it.

Yes, I have. Back when jobs were more plentiful I would simply walk out. Once I let their boss know why, but honestly I felt that most upper-level managers already knew and simply didn’t care.

No, I didn’t have to. When I discovered he was staying in motel rooms with his mistress and charging them to the company, he hired her to replace me, and gave me six months severance pay.

ubersiren's avatar

@YARNLADY Hey, that’s a pretty sweet firing!

@ubersiren—There’s way more to that story. I was so worried about the financial transfers he was asking me to make, I asked a lawyer friend of mine, who suggested I get him to sign off on every request. That saved me in court a couple of years later.

In my youth I worked for a company welding stainless steel cages for veterinary use. My supervisor was a couple of years younger than I and at the beginning, he seemed to be a pretty good guy. We took lunch breaks together, had beers together after work and seemed to be on the friend-path. One day, after he had gone to lunch with some of the other workers, he returned, belligerent and drunk as a skunk and picked a fight with me in the plant. The owner watched all this from his perch and said nothing. When I complained, he had the nerve to ask me, “Well? What do you want me to do about it?” My reply was, “You can cut my final paycheck right now, or I’ll press charges against the supervisor for assault and battery. Then, I’ll sue the company, you AND the supervisor and after that make a formal complaint to OSHA and any other government office I can think of. He quickly cut my check. I heard from another worker that the supervisor was fired moments after I left the building. Sadly, it was a case of too little, too late..

@Rufus_T_Firefly – I remember you. You got me fired, you son of a bitch!

Rufus_T_Firefly's avatar

@ Corporate Avenger: Take that, you dream-crusher. If it wasn’t for you, I’d still be having the time of my life welding animal cages for eight bucks an hour. LMFAO
