How do these Q+A sites get traffic?

I know SEO is probably a strength for them, but what other successful methods of trafic generation are there?

Almost all SEO. But there some publicity as well. Fluther got a sigificant chunk of change from investors a while back, and that made the news.

People want to know things. They google things and sites like these pop up. Bam.

Word of mouth brought me here. Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another…...

Last I checked, about 75% of Fluther’s traffic came from search engines. Google was by far the biggest referrer.

I found this site through another website. I find Q&A sites through a search engine like Google, through word of mouth, or through ads.

Promote your site in QA sites. Start questions add some good content in your site and give reference of them while answering.
