What's Your Best New Year's Eve Memory?

Asked by uniquenewyork (295points) December 19th, 2009

Trying to decide what to do this NYE. My friends don’t want to go to bars and spend a lot of money. What are some of your favorite New Year’s Eve memories? What makes the night fun?

It involved drinking champagne off of body parts and that’s all I’m going to say.

Watching the sun creep up over Grand Canyon on an insanely cold New Year’s Day morning.

Waldorf Astoria, New York City. 1984
And everything that happened that evening.

The Ritz, NYC 1985
I do not remember much of that night.

I would like to go into detail but I would then have to kill myself.

2001. Was in AK at the time. At a concert. It was me 3000 people and Megadeth that brought in the new year. (^_^”)-b

One year after we had done some drinking, we grabbed some decorative candy canes from my friend’s front yard. (These were the type that are hollow). At midnight, we then proceeded to shoot roman candles through them – starting from the long part and then hooking back through the loop. That turned into a roman candle war, and though there were several burn injuries, it was a great time.

It being my birthday, I have confusing and ambivalent memories. A bad day to be born.

Going into NYC from college, watching the ball drop at Times Square and then back to the Village for a party. They’ve never quite made it up that high since, although last year I did manage to still be up at midnight at a friend’s dinner party.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye! And apparently afterward, too. ;)

Some of my college friends and I have been getting together in NYC every New Year’s Eve for the last 15 years. The evening always starts out the same way: We go to a local cheap Chinese restaurant (must have free wine), and gorge on dumplings, sesame noodles, and other favorites. Then we go back to someone’s apartment and have a “Year End Wrap-Up.” Everyone tells a summary of their year, and the group toasts that person when he or she is done.

The group has been getting larger and larger, so often this takes until 10 or 11 p.m. Then we chill, play cheesy board games, watch the ball drop, and stay up all night. :-)
