If social networks can't make money from advertisements, How they are going to earn money?

Asked by Ranimi23 (1917points) December 19th, 2009

I have read interesting article about Facebook and Advertising. This is something to think about. If social networking can not make money from ads, so how they are going to survive in the future? I think there is a limit on how much money a company can spent with no money coming in, only out.

It seems like nobody except Google is making money on the web.

I don’t know but I will say this if they want me to pay it’s not going to happen, I’m wasting my time on them as it is, I want to quit and if they make me pay that will help me.

they can (and possibly do) charge cell phone carriers and other interested parties for access to their services. cell phone companies who can offer facebook as a free goto place on their network will have a marketing advantage over those who don’t.

essentially, we would pay for facebook through our cell phone bills.

One word: porn.

@Vincentt
Who pays for porn?

As many as are sprouting up these days, there must be a buck to be made on advertising. I am sure there will be a shakeout coming. There are too many currently to all do well.

@Seek_Kolinahr Who pays for porn?? Too many people, that is why some innocent looking searches bring you porn sites out the wahzoo the 1st 3 pages.

@Hypocrisy_Central
I’m just sayin’... there’s so much free porn on the internet, only an idiot would actually spend money on it.

@Seek_Kolinahr Surf a few of those “free” porn sites and your poor computer is very likely to end up with a social disease or two. Many of them operate by disguising agreements to install spyware or worse as links to videos or enlarged photos.

@ Ranimi23: They can sell your personal information to third parties.

@Seek_Kolinahr: “there’s so much free porn on the internet, only an idiot would actually spend money on it.” <== not so. For instance, consider people who are a fan of a certain porn star. Consider people who have a very narrow fetish. Consider people who want higher quality images or video than is available on free sites. Consider people who want to stick with the same site(s) they have been with for many years. Consider if you had a stolen credit card. Consider people who go with a particular site based upon reviews. Consider someone who believes free sites mean “computer is very likely to end up with a social disease or two” (@ETpro). Consider people who want to support the porn industry or even free speech.

@malevolentbutticklish Hey, all for free speech. Particularly the really sexy kind. :-)

@Seek_Kolinahr see @malevolentbutticklish `s answer. Then, not to mention advertisements. If i am not wrong, Pornhub and and Porntube rank under Alexa`s top 50 most visited in the world. (not verified) Imagine all that ‘grow your junk’ ads and sex toy ads and sex facebook ads, and etc. Porn simply means big business. But then again, so is drug-trafficking, child trading, pimping and all that bad stuff.

Games and additional apps. Facebook already has this. They could even open up a merch store of they wanted to.
