When an item or service is advertised on television , radio, the internet , in magazines etc as “Free” , “Free Sample” etc . ; Should there be “Shipping” and / or “Handling” Charges added , or should there be absolutely “No” cost since the ad says “Free” ?

Sure. If the total cost is spelled out, you can go for it or not.

It works the same with “not-free” products, you have to consider the total cost to decide if the deal is worthwhile.

Weeeeell if there weren’t they’d basically be paying YOU to take their merch, which is kind of weird…

I’m sure that you can call to order the thing and then have them hold it for you at the warehouse door, so that you can pick it up, unwrapped & unshipped. Go ahead and call them on this…

Yes, or no one would do those jobs because they wouldn’t get paid.

Why not? It costs them money to package, process and ship whatever it is they are sending to you. Though, sometimes some merchants’ shipping and handling charges seem a tad excessive, somebody has to pay for shipping and handling. And if manufacturers/merchants are giving away things for free, it really seems like it should be the person receiving the item that should pay.

That’s how they get you shipping and handling is usually $7~$12

I say no, because I feel that would be false advertising.

Being charged shipping and handling is reasonable if the item is free. So long as it’s not WAY over the reasonable fee. I don’t think there is a limit on what a company can charge for S&H and I’ve seen some pretty high charges but most are a fair amount.

Of course. They are either expressly stated or hidden in the cost of the item you purchase. No business can operate for long at a loss on every item they sell. WHat I object to is when companies use inflated S&H charges to make their offering price sound really attractive. The junk that you get from “As Seen on TV” and Billy Mays commercials falls in that genre.

Many times they are misleading at best and sometimes intentionally so. That is how they make their profit.

Well you can’t send things for free. UPS, FED EX, THE US POST OFFICE charge the supplier to handle packages being send via their company and in so doing they charge the purchaser. Or I guess they could just automatically include it in the price of the item and tell you the S&H is free.

Absolutely not! (I’m just trying to save a buck.)

@Cruiser and @Polly_Math I agre. When it says “FREE” that should mean that there are absolutely “NO” charges or fees whatsoever….

If they want to charge; they should say ;“For only the price of S&H ; we’ll send you a “copy”, Sample” or “Whatever” ...... NOT: that it is “FREE”.

That is like those darn internet sites where they say “FREE” ; then once you click on, you need to JOIN their site etc to get the info…. all about the almighty $$$$ and ways to rip other folks off to get it .
